Neue Gallerie, New York City (Austrian Art & Food)

The Neue Gallerie is a relatively small museum specializing in Austrian and Germany art. The museum also has a wonderful restaurant serving Austrian and German food.

The Neue Gallerie is one of my favorite small museums in NYC.

 

Their shows are always top notch and exquisitely presented.

 

If early 1900's Vienna is your thing (and if it's not...you're a moron)

then a pilgrimage to this American outpost is truly heavenly.

 

It's as close to Vienna as you can get in the US. I once took a homesick

Austrian there for lunch. He was so thankful he cried.

Also famous for the Gustav Klimt painting Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer which was purchased in 2006 for $135 million. The movie Woman in Gold starring Helen Mirren is about Adele's niece who fought to get the painting back. It had been seized by the Nazis during the war. The building itself is an architectural gem Louis XIII Beaux-Arts style.

I believe the Belvedere has the most Klimt paintings, but the Leopold has a very large selection of German Expressionist paintings. Most people spent more time at the Leopold. The Belvedere is much more than just an art museum.
