I think he'd find Hollywood more centralized and there are many hotels from which to choose. Here's a short list:

Legend Hotel, Cahuenga Blvd

Mama Shelter, Selma Ave.

Dunes Inn, Sunset Blvd

W, Hollywood Blvd

Avalon Hollywood, Vine St.

Days Inn, Sunset Blvd

The Moment Hotel, Sunset Blvd

summer in LA in the popular areas can be pricey.....can be hard to balance hotel convenience and value.......weekend/weekday/conventions/tourists all affect rates.....a "bargain" may end being an older, tired, noisy, rough-around-the-edges "motel" with screaming kids who seem to "live" in the pool and AC that struggles......

most of the nicer chain hotels near LAX are entirely fine and, traditionally, not expensive (for Los Angeles), but the location is not utterly convenient for some.....

some places over in the valley (Burbank et al) may be efficient and convenient for many.....and downtown LA has several new-ish places that might be half-empty and looking to fill rooms, but parking fees will be astronomical for visitors and highway access can be time-consuming......

your friend may want to skip renting a car and just taxi/uber/lyft all over as needed....the subway is an option, too, for transport to some areas

True. Just left the Moment Hotel. Great location with easy access, and the Sunset Grill is across the street for some Don Henley nostalgia.

The Days Inn on Sunset is pretty nice. Not a Hyatt or a Hilton, but decent. Heard the Dunes Inn on Sunset is very similar to the one on Wilshire. Haven't stayed at the Dunes Inn on Sunset, but have stayed at the one on Wilshire. Very clean, but the rooms were rather musty. Were they to freshen the rooms they could play off the mid-century vibe and it would be a great place.

EDIT: I forgot to mention it is the Dunes Inn on Sunset that is similar to the Dunes Inn on Wilshire.
