Casting Musts in Big Brother--

1 quirky older guy

1 super religious person, probably African American

1 loud gay guy

1 arrogant alpha male, possibly 2

1 very bland blonde woman, possibly 2

1 good-hearted meathead

1 straight man who talks about his wife all of the time

1 straight woman who talks about her children all of the time

1 person who brags about his/her unusual job

1 person who lies about his/her unusual job

1 snarky bitch, of either sex

1 nerdy twink, not necessarily gay

What have I left out?

16 individuals, who undergo extensive psychological screening and profiling, all revealing they are high-strung, have paranoid tendencies, and love attention. All prone to outbursts. All willing to be exploited in pursuit of a convoluted definition of fame.

In general, people who, if you got to know them in the real world, you'd eventually recommend psychotherapy and/or medication.

I remember in season 1, the cast thought they'd all be celebrities when the show was over. When Curtis won the chance to go to some awards show, he came back and told the others he'd found out the ratings weren't great, and they were all crestfallen. They'd spent the summer assuming they were a sensation, and everyone in the country was watching them.

I don't know why you guys are so obsessed with having "normal" gay guys represented. What's normal anyways? Only slightly effeminate or does he have to be completely "straight acting?" What about a hyper-masculine pornstar-ish type?

My point is that it is a good thing to expose Middle America to the outer spectrum of our behavior patterns. The fact is that many gay men are on the effeminate side. They are also the most oppressed segment of our people. It's a good thing for people who are generally ignorant about "the gays" to see them interacting in a group as if there is nothing odd about it.

Frankie Grande was the most flamboyant gay guy ever to appear on Big Brother. He blatantly flirted and was affectionate with the muscle hunks of the season and had a total bromance with Zach Rance. Who, as far as I know, has turned out to be truly straight.

Fankie was wildly popular. That was the season with Cody (an unbelievably beautiful metrosexual) and Caleb (a big strong good ol' boy type.) I thought it was a hugely positive thing for Middle America to see.

I can see your point at times in the casting. Yet the acceptance of the gay guys, be they fem or not, gives me hope for how the younger generations are now so comfortable that it hardly matters to most of the other houseguests at all anymore. @OCClient there have been a few notable exceptions to your stereotypical type of gay on Big Brother, though.

Drew Daniel, the winner of season 5, who showmanced Diane for much of his game and then chose 'Cowboy' over her in the final three, came out of the closet a few years after his season:

http://photos1.blogger.com/img/90/1350/640/Drew10.jpg

'Crazy' James Zinkand from season 9, admitted freely that he was bisexual and gay videos of him were found on the porn site Dirty Boy Video.com, which he seemed to not be ashamed of:

He loved to streak and run around the house nude, shocking some of the other houseguests during his season, obviously a true exhibitionist!

and Steven Daigle, a gay rodeo cowboy who only lasted two weeks in season 10, but launched a gay porn career because of his Big Brother exposure which was backed by Chi Chi LaRue and was quite successful until he got dragged down by drugs much later: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ShTElXkby2w/S_7KFvjj4BI/AAAAAAAADcw/1EaOeFk246A/s1600/Steven+Daigle+004.jpg

I had in mind the contestants that were actually out of the closet within the reality that CBS scripts for that show. But I'm glad to hear CBS has realized there is more diversity to gay men then pink-haired dynamo Frankie Grande. Sounds like I should tune in again, if just to see the beautiful beefcake you gentlemen are praising from the current season!!

Still, Frankie Grande and Zack Rance bromances aside, one of the main reasons I watch this show so faithfully (besides the obvious male pulchritude on display every season!) is to see players like Danielle Reyes in season 3, a very intelligent woman of color who almost from day one had a completely secret alliance with the most white, bland but cute, religious young man, (who always was much more impressive to me because he never preached or pushed his bible at anyone, just lived his beliefs and never judged others) Jason Guy which absolutely no other HG ever suspected. She would have won that season but the producers allowed the jury to view her diabolical (they were quite funny!) diary room sessions and they became angry with her personally for getting them out of the house one by one. The producers never allowed the jury out of sequester after that season either.

The other player of greatest note to me was the winner of season 10, Dan Gheesling, who literally wrote the book on how to win Big Brother. He even at times was issued directives through America's vote where he had to do this or that sneaky 'prank' on a houseguest. He not only accomplished it all 'under the radar' but also outwitted almost every evictee into believing they were sent out by someone else, thus remaining his staunch friend on the jury. In addition, Dan came back for season 14 and even though everyone knew his techniques for winning season 10, he ended up runner-up for that season! Season 10 was one of the most satisfying seasons ever for me of Big Brother!

Those are the two Big Brother players who most impressed me, but there were others: Dr. Will Kirby, winner of season 2, Janelle Pierzina, who always seemed to pull victory from defeat in season 6, Jeff Schroeder in season 11, who not only met his future wife in a showmance that season, but has now become the online face of Big Brother for CBS, and Derrick Levasseur, winner of season 16, the Rhode Island police detective who literally ran the house from behind the scenes, a great strategist who always remained the voice of reason in the house! You may grouse about certain casting choices but once in a while there appears a player with a brand new strategy who makes it all worthwhile! This is why I continue being addicted to Big Brother.

I haven't watched as faithfully as you, but agree completely about Danielle, she was a brilliant player and immensely entertaining. Jason was her only vote on the jury, and the woman who won (Lisa) had floated through the season without making any impression. There was no reason to vote for her, but the offended jury members voted against Danielle. Totally unjust.

WHo would do that? Who would vote againt the more deserving candidate just because she was smarter and more capable? Who would vote against the hardest working candidate just because you did notl like them? Oh, never mind, just most Americans.

Steven Daigle, a gay rodeo cowboy who only lasted two weeks in season 10, but launched a gay porn career because of his Big Brother exposure which was backed by Chi Chi LaRue and was quite successful until he got dragged down by drugs much later:

There is another alumnus of the show who's done porn, Will Wikle of season 5.

He was another flamboyant gay guy, but turned into a bit of a bodybuilder for his porn career.

Thanks for pointing that out, @BasketBaller. I had forgotten about Will Wikle's porn career. When he was on Big Brother 5, he was 25 years old and a nurse who fit the gay flamboyant stereotype. Once he entered his porn career at age 36, he had worked his body into shape, gotten a few tats, and had become quite the macho power bottom. You can find some of his videos on pornhub with such well-known gay adult actors as Colby Keller and Jimmy Durano! I was never much impressed with his persona (his real? personality) on Big Brother 5, but find him pretty hot in his porn!

I am a huge Big Brother fan but occasionally take a summer or two off from the show. I haven't watched at all this season but have all the episodes saved up on my DVR. Should I catch up or take this year off? Is this season worth the time commitment so far?

to me... this season's cast is, in a word, underwhelming... but Paul's presence has me close to hitting the DELETE key!

Depends on why you watch.

To some extent, I find the psychology fascinating. I'm intrigued by the questions "why do these people allow themselves to be exploited so?" And "do the guests realize that they were screened and selected because they're emotionally unstable?" Add in some eye candy.... its like watching fuses burn, cant look away.

This season's cast is crazier than the past few to me. Ive never abandoned a season altogether, but there have been seasons I get bored partway through then skip episodes, or watch them in fast forward. Not bored yet this summer.

Ive sent a letter to the Psychiatry department at UC recommending that they assign BB viewing to study neuroses.

As with every season there has to be someone you love and someone you love to hate. This season has (had) a couple of each for me so it's been pretty entertaining. We've already lost one of my "love to hate" people and another is on the block, so it might get less entertaining for me here soon.

Exploited? A potential half million dollars for one summer's worth of work. I wish someone would try to exploit me like that.

Lot of money... but it was big money when the show first aired, but today.... not so impressive.

If you listen to the guests on after dark (i watched prior seasons, only once this year) theyre all hoping to launch reality TV star careers.

And I wouldnt subject myself to that experience for a guaranteed $1 million, yet alone just a small chance at $500K.

Some of these people do make careers from shows like this. Rob and Amber from Survivor and also Amazing Race.

Krista and Ryan from the Bachelorette and more recently American Ninja Warrior have reality supplement their real lives. Reichen from the Amazing Race and A-List New York and assorted other things has had notable success. I know some of the Big Brother people have had success on the periphery of show business and in general business because of the notoriety bestowed by the show. So while it is not a sure shot, these kind of shows allow for some minimally talented and better than average looking people to have a chance to live a life on the periphery of fame and fortune. Not my goal, but it is the goal of many people in the US.

Exactly right.

That goal explains a great many things about our country. We're a reality TV society.

Talent has been surpassed by being noticed - by any means.

And no one seems to thing it odd, that 15 years ago, most people wouldnt admit to glancing through the Enquirer while waiting in the checkout line. Now theyll subject themselves to anything, recording and taking selfies, for a shot at being noticed on Youtube or Instagram.

The most notorious Big Brother contestant of all isn't even from a USA version. In Australia's Season 6, Jamie Brooksby, who I think won his season, had the hugest cut cock south of the Tropic of Capricorn and a fine everything else to go along with it (funny, fit, flirty, tan). I haven't been enjoying this season that much. I really liked the dyed hair girl who quit, and find Cody to be the biggest ass in the history of the show (at least Evil Dick acted like he gave a damn).

Unfortunately, Megan (the blue-dyed hair girl who quit) was damaged too much by having been sexually abused in the armed services and thus had developed PTSD. After the puerile, childish Josh went off on her for no reason the first day in the house and the cast tried to accuse her of lying about a racial comment concerning the Asian-American houseguest, Alex, she was unable to handle the negative bullying. Here was an obvious instance of someone who should never have made it past the psychological screenings for Big Brother. Yes, the producers love to cast people who will rub their fellow HG's the wrong way, but once in a while they have to remove someone from the house, or in this case let someone self-evict.

Watched tonight's episode and actually found myself screaming at the screen in relation to Cody talking Jess out of changing the nominations. Now I am screaming in my head at myself for knowing what that last sentence means.

But really, that guy is as stupid as he is sexy, and he is plenty sexy.

I had the same reaction. One of the dumber moves I've seen in years. If you want to ensure someone gets voted out, you put someone popular and influential from the other group against him. There are things about Cody's personality that I really like, but he is definitely one of the worst social game players I can remember.
