This board is a great resource, as are Daddy's Reviews.

But it also breeds skepticism. A significant portion of the ads seen and discussed here are evaluated and labelled as some form of "too good to be true."

I'm under no illusions that the phony or misleading ads are preventable. But I'd imagine the skepticism is frustrating for the good guys.

With the understanding that I have zero idea regarding the advertiser sites' protocol or fees... I wonder:

Wouldn't it eliminate some frustration if escorts or masseurs added a selfie to their ads, with the local paper or other dated item? And updated it regularly? While that may, technically, only address timely concerns, and not actual verification.... I'd be much less likely to be skeptical about the honesty of a guy who can produce a monthly, proven-as-recent, self photo.

Might not be great for the websites, as eventually, the fakers might stop buying ads that, by comparison, are ineffective.

How would you enforce that rule?

Get used to it, this is an illegal and unregulated activity. It does not matter what your expectations are, there is no industry authority to set an standard.

You can make the suggestion, and some professionals would take it, as a matter of fact there are guys who are updating regularly their pictures in Twitter and/or using your suggestion, but I think you cannot aspire to more than that.

I'm not suggesting it as a rule.

I'm suggesting that escorts and masseurs voluntarily post pictures with the newspaper or???? Only the good honest one's would do it.

I just think it would make for better business for them.... or at least weed a portion of the BS they likely endure because of the dishonest practices of the bad guys.

I wonder how often a reputable, honest escort or masseur gets asked "are those your real pictures? Are they current?"

It's laughable that most of the ads on backpages say something like "all of the other ads have fake pictures, but mine are real." I'd take notice of a Rent.Men or Rentmasseur ad that has a picture of the advertising escort holding up a recent newspaper, and maybe a line in the ad copy "I post an updated picture monthly/quarterly so that you can be confident that these are my genuine, current pictures."

... a recent newspaper...

I expect the reaction from most of the guys would be 'Newpaper? I've seen those on TV!"

simpsons-newspaper13.jpg

Consider the age group and the current reality. The reason the newspaper used to be useful was because everyone read them (it was the only thing you could read everyday). Since everyone knew what the headline was any given day, it was quick proof the photo couldn't be any older than the date on the newspaper.

I saw one profile where the guy had handwritten a date on a sheet of paper and was holding it up. I don't think he gets it...

@latbear4blk has been a big advocate for video chat apps, if you want to be sure and I have to say, it makes sense.

Off topic: When I was young, if I had an open day, I loved to go to the newsstand (yes a store that only sold newspapers and magazines) and buy a huge pile of papers and mags and spend the day in bed, reading. Time went by much more slowly in those days...

When the provider is resistant to my videoconference request, starts making excuses, and I am not in the mood to arguing, I ask him for a selfie holding a sign that reads "Hola (my real name)". He has no excuse to not send this picture, other than not wanting to. It is funny how now and then I find in BP and Adam guys I contacted months ago, having this verification picture posted in their profiles.

Ive been offered FaceTime. But i am an android user and FT only works for ios.

It left me a little bewildered. I had assumed the guy was fake, until he offered FT. But then i couldn't participate, and he wasn't willing to skype, etc.

I will remember the Hola photo solution.

Good point, but there are other solutions for dates. Stand before a big TV, tuned to a channel with time &date. E.g. local weather, news, even some channel guides. I know TV pics are often poor quality, but as long as date is readable......

Time & Date flash at us everywhere. In urban settings, stand by an electronic sign, etc.

Skype? An alternative to a dedicated phone/tablet platform

In many many years pursuing this hobby, I've never seen the proliferation of fake pictures in ads at the level we see today :( And I'm saying it's worse than the days of print advertising like Advocate/Frontier here in SoCal, when there was zero ways to verify.

I don't think a public/private photo in an ad is a bad idea, I've seen 2-3 ads with a pic and handwritten note with a date being held up. But I ask for selfies, video chat, etc. based on the level of cooperation with that request I make my decision.

Its weird and disappointing that its worse.

When the internet was "young" -90s - guys were using fake pictures on AOL, IRC chat, etc. Is today's non-escort scene just as bad? Are a very significant portion of Grindr pictures fake?

It's frustrating! And the dark underside (which has been discussed in these forum before) is that these posers get away with it, preying on clients.

We are lucky we have this resource here to vet pics and people. But we are an infinitesimal percentage of the hiring client base, most clients aren't as informed as we are. Add to this clients who are nervous, inexperienced, not out, plain scared and then guys with fake pics show up and get paid because the client doesn't know what to do!!! So that business model is *working* for scammers!!!

That behavior boggles my mind. All the way back to Atkol, more frequently when MSS was more active, I was posting about this stuff. Im just astonished by guys who choose to be victims.

I understand if there is a genuine physical threat. But when I read posts where guys say "I didnt know what to do, so I just paid him." or even worse "he was totally not as advertised, and unattractive, but I didnt want to insult him. So I went through with it, and it was awful."

Not from escorting world... I heard a speaker at a conference tell a funny story once, that exemplifies our desire to be nice people - even when we shouldnt. On a dark and stormy night, the guy stops at an ATM. He's approached by a robber, who first asks some questions, eventually pulls a gun, gets ATM withdrawals, wallet, watch, etc. The victim goes to the police. They get access to the ATM security camera. The video shows that, throughout the confrontation, the victim made sure to hold his umbrella so that the crook was shielded from the rain!

I think of that story when I read about rentguy clients who choose to be victimized. We're programmed to be nice and non-confrontaional... not being able to shut it off when necessary, makes people prey.

Atkol? MSS? Well you and I have a similar background. Frontiers/Advocate in print? Lol...

Great ATM story, rings true in this hobby.

I can count on one hand how many times I've had to tell a gentleman caller "you're not who you said you are, goodbye " and it was SO SCARY the first time!! But I did it then and would do it again. I even booted a guy to the door already naked and 15 mins into a session as he lay there like a dish towel doing zip for either of us

We probably do have common experiences.

I was much more active in mid 90s through mid 00s... and didnt hire at all from 2012 til last week. I think of it as active... I tried remembering and calculating my "number" a few weeks ago when I found these forums. Really, I probably hired 30 different guys over those years... I liked repeats.

Of the 30, perhaps 5-6 required some fortitude. That nervous pit in my stomach, when I needed to take a breath, and not be a victim. Luckily, I never felt genuinely physically threatened. The worst, (and not really that bad, )

I was in a hotel in San Jose CA. Hired a guy. Showed up, ok, but not as hoped. Started playing, he actually zoned out, sort of fell asleep. When I asked what was happening, he said it was his blood sugar. Within a few minutes, he was fine, but no longer performing; and I'd lost interest. Asked him to leave, offered a partial payment. He tried to be menacing. I tensed, got scared for a second. Gathered my wits, and picked up the phone, telling him I was calling for security. He bolted.

In retrospect, I decided that was his scam. Play a few minutes, feign illness, get the money and go.

The bad guys rely on human tendency to willingly play victim. And, mostly, they're shocked when we stand up for ourselves.

Well that's what the Rentmen verified photo/verified ID icon lit up helps to verify. In order for us to earn that, one must show take a photo with the criteria that matches the person on the ad. And Voila! Escort is verified.

There may be some people who don't want to do that but are still real, but that's a good baseline and indicator of someone being the real deal.

Thanks. I learned something. Does verification require renewal? So that pics are also relatively recent?

Rentmen does have an ID verification and pic verification option. You can see in each guys ad whether they have been verified. I've had my ad on Rentmen for probably 5 years and just realized 2 weeks ago that I'd never verified either, so I took care of it. For the pic verification it required holding a piece of paper with "Rentmen" and the date written on it.

So if I have a hot friend who is willing to make me the favor, I can use a set of his pictures and ask him to take the one for "verification" for me, and my fake ad would be verified. Right?

Nothing is ever foolproof.

Id probably take the RM verification as a positive sign

But there are situations that would make me skeptical regarding RM verification. For example, I occassionally note that two or three Eastern European shredded fitness model-types all arrive in town on the same date. I've seen ads with matching phone or whatsapp numbers. (Which suggests to me there's some kind of "handler" travelling with 2-3 guys) Anyway, if there are other clues indicating relatively sophisticated trickery.... the picture verification wouldn't be enough.

Best assurance... daddys or reviews here, validating the guy is genuine.

No. You're getting a bit whimsical here. Because the ID will be matched with the credit card on file. Rentmen doesn't allow you to use friend's boyfriend's or neighbors credit card. Plus I don't know any person who's willing to willingly allow their pictures to be used along with their ID.

Again, the exception being the 'handler', who could indeed be the real thing. But sends out other parties to actually do the meeting of clients.
