@Moondance, As you probably know Ethel was born Ethel Zimmermann. Always practical, she realized a shorter name was needed for Broadway and movies, thus "merman." I did see her once on Broadway, many, many years ago in "Gypsy."

I may be wrong about this, but from other posts you've made, WilliamM, I have the impression that you saw a lot of the great entertainers of the 20th century in live performance. And I am appropriately jealous.

 

P.S. My own Gypsy experience was a big disappointment. Remember the Tyne Daly revival? (I think she won a Tony for it.) I got tickets and hauled myself to New York and -- whaddaya know -- before the curtain came up, the dreaded announcement: Miss Daly will not be appearing tonight ... No memory whatsoever of who the understudy was (maybe she's A Big Star now and I'd be glad to have seen her!) ... bummer. Would love to have seem Merman belting it out to the balcony!!

Mary Martin won the Tony Award for Best Actress in A Musical that year over Ethel Merman. I saw Martin in "The Sound of Music" as well as Merman in "Gypsy." I did see Tyne Daly and Bernadette Peters in "Gypsy" revival, and then I just gave up.

 

Back then, I would have been interesting to see Martin in "Gypsy" and Merman in "The Sound of Music." Martin did take big chances playing Judy Holliday's lead role in "Born Yesterday" on television. Also, She played Tallulah Bankhead's lead role in "The Skin of Our Teeth" on TV and in a Broadway revival.
