It uses all the phone numbers in your contacts, including your own various phone numbers, if you give it permission to do do so.

I’m not so sure it’s a matter of transparently giving “permission” as you suggest. People are going to considerable lengths to try to avoid this from happening, but somehow FB manages to link people who are actively trying not to be linked. One theory is that FB links people when they log onto the same IP address with both accounts. If that’s the case, it would seem that it’s not enough to use different FB accounts, different phones, and restrictive settings…you may also have to always use your phones in completely different locations with different Internet connections. Not very practical if you want to work from home.

Here’s a similar article I saw recently, about Google illegally (though inadvertently) violating court-ordered publication bans involving crime victims: http://www.vancouversun.com/news/ottawa/google+linking+secret+court+protected+names+online+coverage/14774720/story.html.

These technologies seem to be making it more and more difficult for people to maintain their privacy, even when they are diligently doing everything they can (short of unplugging completely and moving to the mountains) to be careful about their personal information.

Or simply recognize Facebook as the evil entity that it is. No respect for privacy, no boundaries, and willing to do anything to monetize your personal information. Accept that as a fact and either close your account or continue to be their victim.

I actually have no privacy concerns. I don't give a damn who knows what I'm up to, but I refuse to let Mark Zuckerberg make another dime off of me.

Yup. Worst still. I was making contact with an out of town guy who I never ended up meeting. Apparently he found me on FB and sent me a request. Blocked his ass and will never consider him for his appalling lack of discretion.

I have received requests back when my personal phone number was on my ad and linked on FB. Those friend requests were promptly ignored. Now my FB is on every highest privacy setting, and my work phone and email are entirely separate. There's something to be said for privacy. FB doesn't believe in it.

I have found a number of escorts on FB by searching their phone numbers. I always tell them about it so they can take precautions if they choose to do do.

Happened recently with a dancer at SR. Got his number and FB recommended him as a potential friend a few days later. Different name but definitely him. Just need to be careful.

real-life friends of mine sometimes pressure me to join FB because I miss out on parties, vacations, pictures, announcements, general contact, the whole bit..... I'm one of three or four without FB who one person has to send special emails to so we're all covered.....

after reading the horror stories above, glad I resisted FB in the first place.....

just received a LinkedIn "invitation" a couple weeks ago "from" an escort I haven't seen in a couple years.....it was with my alternate email I use for this hobby and I know it was all automated by LinkedIn from his contact list, so not really upset about that event.....it used his real name (I knew it already) and I momentarily thought it really came from him.......a direct email to him to say "hi" went unanswered - he retired a long while ago......no surprise.....

My first college roommate still keeps inviting me to join Linkdin. We remained friends for over 40 years until he died in 2010.

Never been on any social media networks and never will. 50th high school reunion coming up next year and they want me to join FB so I can get all the information - no thanks, I'll see you all there (very small class) but anyone I want to stay in touch with I'll call or email.
