+ on avoiding congress. I think the Fairmont and Hard Rock are overflow hotels again this year and have a lot nicer rooms for similar rates.

It's too bad they can't get it back at nicer hotel like the Hyatt or Palmer house It's a lot more fun staying at the IML host hotel but I refuse to stay at that dump

I like the Congress Plaza Hotel. It's haunted and it has a bar. Win, win!

Congress Plaza is a Fucking Dump -- They have been hiring scab labor for years - Because the Union is on Strike! Last time I was there for a work conference

the ceiling literally fell in on the room and the AC was spewing dustbunnies -- the Bar did not have my brand - but if I gave the bartender the money she would pick up a bottle on her way into work and then sell it back to me - Retail!! - great Deal -- Oh and the food sucked and the room had a 19in TV about 15 feet from the bed and the

lamp and the overhead light had 40 watt bulbs -- You turned them on and the room went dark! Oh and of course the tub did not drain and there was a scary hole about 4 inches around next to the toilet that something was living in --- Otherwise the place was just a delight!

We'll be at the Palmer House Hilton a few blocks from the host hotel.

We haven't done IML before. Any suggestions on the not-to-miss events?

Palmer house is a great location. I usually stay there when I'm in Chicago and I wish IML would return there.

Events depend on what you are into. While it's not an IML event, I always like the Grabby's but a lot of times there's another private party going on at the same time my friend likes to attend but lots of fun and I've had porn stars sit at my table.

Definitely check out the leather market. Before it got moved to the Congress I always liked hanging out at the hotel bar at night but since it's at the congress it isn't as fun, the hotel is a dump and the bar area isn't that great for hanging out at like when it was at the Hyatt.

The LAM museum is fun to check out and they do a few bus trips each day from the host hotel. I used to like the Sunday evening after contest party at House of Blues but haven't been there in at least five years, it ended up being more circuit boys/fag hags than leather guys the last ocuple years I went

If you aren't on recon I'd recommend joining. They sponsor a couple events at IML as well.

I've never been but I've heard about it. How would you compare it to MAL?

I go to both almost every year.

The leather market at IML is definitely a lot better and the donation goes to a good cause (LAM). MAL admission I don't believe goes to a charity and the leather market is not worth paying to get into and I didn't go to the market this year.

MAL host hotel is definitely a lot nicer than the IML dump. I like the staff at the MAL Hyatt as well, they really get into the event and this year wore MAL t-shirts. One thing I used to enjoy at IML was hanging out at the host hotel bar at night and it isn't fun anymore since it's at the congress but still fun at the Hyatt.

I think the MAL crowd is friendlier. Still mainly guys into leather and fetishes and IML has had a lot more of the twink/non leather types, fag hags and curious people in recent years.

IML is a lot bigger event but with the exception of the leather market lately I have been enjoying MAL more

Cool...thanks a lot. Sounds like it's gone downhill recently. That's a shame. I suppose we won't know the difference since it's our first time, but maybe we'd have more fun doing other things...lol.

Once you step foot inside the Congress for IML you'll be thankful you are staying at the Palmer House;)

Good to know! Hopefully we won't get too many stares and finger-wagging when we go from one hotel to the other in leather gear.

I live @ 1 block away from the Congress and no one will be pointing a finger (I don't think). Most of the people who live in my neighborhood are college kids. And the colleges are principally "arts" colleges (i.e., theater, dance, photo, decorative, etc.) So there is already a lot of neon-dyed hair and funky clothing. And the rest of us old fogies are inured to such things. Plus this has been going on for a good number of years.

Tyler and Ace in Leather walking down the street. No stares? I would expect dragging tongues, some heavy movement of hand fans and more than a few cases of the vapors. I am feeling a bit of a swoon coming on with just the thought
