This is a factor about transitioning that confuses me: if the person is female and attracted to males, why transition to male? Also the reverse, if the person is male and attracted to females, why transition to female. I'm thinking there must be some emotional factors that are not obvious to me.

I have a soon-to-be-thirty housemate who is becoming transgendered. If you're over the age of 30, you probably won't understand what's going on. I certainly don't.

There's a difference between gender and sexuality.

Most people who transition carry their original orientation with them. For example a straight cis man who is attracted to women will transition to a straight trans woman who is attracted to men.

As @gallahadesquire says, gender identity and orientation are different things.

Part of the difficulty of understanding that seems to lie in our preconception that orientation is mostly hard-wired, permanent and fixed. But research seems to suggest more and more that it is much more complicated than that, and can be much more fluid across a lifetime. (NOT that we can just choose it at will, moment to moment willy-nilly [pardon the expression  ], but that it can shift with time.)

Several members here in fact have posted how the center of gravity of their own orientation has changed and flowed over the years.

Ultimately, first and foremost I don't think it has anything to do with sexual attraction. Transitioning is about being your AUTHENTIC self, what you feel you are Gender-wise, and being comfortable in your own skin.

The actual transition comes after a very long, intensive series of physical and psychological testing... From what I've read. its more of a physiological thing than a sexual one.

Thank you all for your responses, which confirm and help diminish my ignorance of some of the emotional and psychological intricacies within the transgendering process. I shall now comfortably settle back into my original philosophy of support for our transgender brothers and sisters: "whatever floats your boat." :)

I have a mostly practical concern about having sex with a trans-man. The FTM surgery has a long way to go before trans-men will resemble cis-men below the belt. One wanting to have sex with a trans-man would need to be very open-minded on this score.

Of course, understood, but unless your focus is 100% COCK... it should be a minor adjustment to overcome. Other than that, they ARE men....
