Ah ... the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammemoor.

When Beverly Sills recorded Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor in the early 1970's Bruno Hoffman played what looked like a series of water filled glasses according to the session photographs. When performed at the MET in more recent years the instrument looks more like the Franklin version:

Incidentally, the glass harmonica does add an mysterious quality that the rewritten standard flute version does not quite provide. When the late Sir Charles Mackerras recorded Lucia with original instruments he unfortunately used the flute version. A missed opportunity! When I saw him conduct the piece at the MET he used the glass harmonica. Since then others have followed by using the harmonica version on various occasions.
