“I was always more masculine. You wouldn’t catch me playing with any Barbie dolls, I’ll tell you that right now.” So it seemed only natural for her to choose to wear a tuxedo to her prom, rather than a glitzy gown.

But officials at the Catholic school weren’t having it. As Wolf’s mother, Carolyn, explains, they sent out a last-minute email in an attempt to dissuade her daughter from wearing a suit, explaining that only male students were permitted to wear suits to prom, and female students were required to wear dresses. But Wolf had already bought a suit — and anyway, she wasn’t about to alter her personal style to appease her overly conservative school.

I'm curious to know what complaint that jackass would have presented to the police department to merit the dispatching of a police unit.

It was most likely an intimidation tactic used to get her to leave that they didn't expect to use, but the school could claim she was trespassing by showing up in a suit after being told she wasn't allowed to wear one to prom. The point of calling the police is to escort her out of there, not to arrest her.

Either way, its the most ridiculous thing, and the school should be Embarrassed for their actions. We send out children to school so they can learn to be "accepting" individuals, and we depend on our educators to motivate and instill this in our youth. What a Travesty ! These people should ALL be fired.....

I don't disagree on the merits, but as a private religiously-affiliated school it can discriminate and make rules in this regard with impunity. (And no, acceptance need not be their objective.) So no, those people can't all be fired. The best that can be done is to publicly shame them for picking a fight over something so trivial.

A friend of mine teaches at a local PUBLIC school. During spirit week, kids were to dress in outfits from the 50's. A girl who identifies as male wanted to come as a greaser (dude) and was told no. The teacher friend of mine (who is female) came as a greaser to protest.

Its all rather Silly really. And what's its really about is CONTROL and nothing more. These protesters need to back the fuck off and allow people to BE who they are, and not what THEY want them to be. .

I agree and was proud of my friend for protesting their protesting in the manner that she did. And this was in a public school in a very "liberal" state.

And if the student is a trans man who hasn't transitioned yet (which I think is what you mean by "girl who identifies as male," but that's not always clear either), it's likely that school violated the very same laws that the Justice Department is suing over.

How is it that the school administration is aware of what attire is being worn to the prom. Perhaps it is just high school gossip that got to the administration. Nevermind, I forgot that everything everyone does in high school, and just about everywhere else these days, is out there for public fodder.

I have kids in high school (and grade school and college) and this is the case, believe me. If she mentioned it to one friend, it likely was carried to the administration via the gossip chain.

I don't understand why any of this is anyone else's business. How a person lives their life is their own business especially if it is not affecting anyone else, which it clearly isn't except in their minds... When it comes to sexuality, people need to mind their own fucking business. I have to please MYSELF, not YOU !

A teacher could have overheard kids talking. There's all sorts of ways even us old fogies could relate to.
