In the days of chimney sweeps and such ... oops, that's scrotal cancer. Nevermind.

In the case of severe phimosis, or for religious purposes, I can understand circumcision. Otherwise, why are we performing unnecessary surgery?

Circumcision now is like tonsillectomy of the '60's.

Although the American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't recommend circumcision of all newborn males (mostly because they're too scared of the backlash), they do state:

The benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks.

And it has various health benefits:

Easier hygiene

Decreased risk of urinary tract infections

Decreased risk of sexually transmitted infections

Prevention of phimosis (the foreskin on an uncircumcised penis can be difficult or impossible to retract)

Decreased risk of penile cancer

Personally, I don't care if someone circumcises their child or not, but it does have health benefits.

The "article" you linked isn't a very good one.

Most (although not all) of those cases are merely accusations or hearsay.

I'm not saying circumcision isn't without risks (although major complications are exceedingly rare).

I'm just saying that article is meant to be inflammatory and does little to intelligently further the debate.

I've read the article and I know it talks about unusual circumstances of medical malpractice. We haven't talked about this issue this year and I brought it back, I remember a poll I started about it and a clear majority preferred cut over uncut guys.

POLL: Do you prefer cut or uncut men?

Laugh as you might but I had some grateful parents that their son's hemophilia was discovered after his circumcision and not with a life-threatening injury. He was seen because his brother's circumcision stopped bleeding quickly and this one did not. He was hospitalized, blood tests determined the diagnosis, he was treated and recovered uneventfully from this episode. He faces a lifetime of treatments and worries but is doing well 30 years later.

The same happened in the Spanish royal family after Alphonse XIII married a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, unfortunately only Prince number 3 was healthy.
