The Art of DELMAS HOWE

Born in Texas in 1935 and raised in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, DELMAS HOWE has created paintings, lithographs, drawings and monotypes that reflect a deep appreciation for the art and mythology of ancient Greece and Rome, an abiding love for--and technical mastery of--the Western landscape and a reinterpretation of male values in Western society.

 

Many observers of his work note its startling juxtaposition of male nudes in the land of the Marlboro man. "I was raised on the laps of real cowboys," says Howe, "and my little boy mind put the two together. That eroticism remains with me today. My works get characterized as homoerotic, but I have never thought of them in that way; I see the cowboy as just about the only thing that approaches romantic mysticism in America."
