THEN...

In 1939, Dorothy Gale blew out of sepia-toned Kansas and into the Technicolor wonderland of Oz. Her dress was strictly farmgirl, but those Ruby Slippers glittered. Men with a deeply-closeted interest in fashion (a/k/a Friends of Dorothy) wondered if they would ever get to wear red shoes.

Nine years later, Moira Shearer was an aspiring ballerina torn between her dedication to dance and her desire for love in The Red Shoes. She reminded more than a few movie-going men of their own desire for love--and of the boring selection of shoes neatly paired on their closet floors. When, they wondered, would it be their turn for the man of their dreams--and some colorful shoes?

Wonderful photos.

I wonder if Judy Garland ever wore rubby red shoes after "The Wizard of Oz."? I believe she was very protective of the film, much more than any of her other films.

I show her perform three times in the 1960s, only once when she was at the height of her career (1961) at Boston Garden. Long time ago when I was a freshman in college
