I've been asked to pay upfront only once. And, I don't think I should have been because I was using an agency and the meeting was in my own apartment - a luxury doorman building, no less. Also, it was the only LESS than pleasant experience I've ever had. When I mentioned that I was displeased with the experience, the jerk snidely said, "That's why I get the money upfront."
