After traveling across Europe earlier this summer, I've rebooked for Miami and Key West. We'll be in Florida the next two weeks, including Labor Day.

Any suggestions on things to do in Miami or Key West? I'd particularly like to know thoughts from an escort's point of view.

email Benjamin Nicholas (San Antonio): He spends a great deal of time in KW and knows the island very very well

In Key West (depending on your interests) I would recommend some scuba diving. If your companion and yourself are not certified yet, you can get your PADI certification in just 10 lessons (10 hours). There are also a variety of other water sports widely available.

It's nice staying at one of the gay guest houses, and apparently the Island House still has it. If you decide to stay somewhere else, you can get a day pass and visit for the day. The Island House has a very nice outdoor pool with a bar, a gym (if you need to stay in shape while traveling) and other cruising areas.

At night, before hitting the gay bars on Duval street, you should definitely consider the sunset celebration at Mallory Square.

Have a great time!

Bourbon St. Pub has male dancers at night , they also have an outdoor pool and bar.

Southernmost beach cafe has breakfast, on sunday you can make your own Bloody mary as you like it.

The beach there is nice.

I've been on the Schooner Western Union, this is really nice at sunset.

tons of restaurants to go to, Blue Heaven is nice for breakfast too.

You might find Hemingways house interesting. I liked the Truman annex, very nostalgic.

The "train ride" thru town is fun to get your bearings if you have never been there before.

I have not biked in Key West but that would be a good way to get around. Usually just walk everywhere.

Have not done fishing but that should be awesome.

Good suggestions from geoffk, but I would add that if you do a tour, try one that allows you to get on and off. The Conch train runs through town at a good pace, and you miss a lot. If for example you get to the Hemingway House, you can't get off.

Going down, the Overseas Highway, is a must see. Many of the upper Keys are scenic. Mile Marker 22 is "The Square Grouper" great sea food. Islamorada is also wonderful. FYI, The hike from Miami to the Keys, can be slow. Two lane almost all the way, with little or no chance for passing, so the drive can be very slow on weekends or during peak travel times. If driving is not your thing, consider flying out of Miami, roundtrip is in the 250-300 range depending.

In the keys you can try Alexander's for lodging or the Marriott. The Marriott has a shuttle that runs to Duval street every 30 min. and goes until 10pm. Once on Duval, treat yourself to a ride with one of the "bike boys" their cute and it's a good way to go up and down Duval in the heat.

For eats, Sloppy Joes is always fun, casual dining and some of the best live music around. Fun crowd. For dinner the "Grand Cafe" will not disappoint. Stop by early and make reservations for dinner and request seating curb side. They will be happy to accommodate, and the views are worth it.

The Garden of Eden is a roof top bar that is clothing optional, and is fun for a peek, but not much else. ;)

Great shopping with some great local artists. Quite interesting if you are so inclined.

Enjoy!!

these are all really overly touristy suggestions. they're fine, but they won't give you a taste of the real island

stay clear of sloppy joes. it's a loud, red neck t shirt sales factory

conch train is over priced and they bullshit about the 'island facts.' it's better to just get out on foot and explore yourself.

the pedi cabs are a rip off and you're best to negotiate the fee BEFORE you get into the thing

considering I'm taking a private jet on my trips to KW, I don't think that's much of an issue :)

Oh yeah, I forgot you only fly private. So says the man who has been on a 787 over 12 times. I can't wait to hear this explanation. You are entertaining Jimbo, if nothing else. :)

If you have to negotiate the price with a bike boy, you have no business traveling.

No sense just flinging it around. http://www.boytoy.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

So, how does one get a 'taste of the real island'?

this is a really good question.

i will be in KW in early October.

I've walked every where in KW so i guess maybe i have gotten a taste of the real KW.

but i'd like to know more about what i should experience.

I liked Sloppy Joes, the food was fine and the guy playing on stage was pretty good too.

Sometimes loud and noisy is fun!

I only did the Conch train once, the first time i was in KW. Like i said it was a good way to see the

highlights of the place before you go exploring on foot. Now the Duck ride was somewhat boring.

The ride thru the harbor seemed to last forever. Just wasn't all that interesting but you did get to

see KW from a different view.

I've traveled to a great many places (none by private jet, but I've had plenty of transport adventures) and Key always has been on my radar. But other than Steven, you guys make it sound like a ho-hum gay-themed tourist trap--house tours, "period correct" B&Bs, crappy tourist trap bars. Even trying to outdo each other with "local knowledge", you make it seem less and less interesting. Only Steven suggested something you couldn't do in many other gay-friendly destinations. I'd hoped for an atmospheric place that transcends its fundamental tourist-trap-ness, like P'town, but you guys make it sound like all the reports I've heard about Key West being over-priced, passed its prime and underwhelming are probably true.

  • 1 month later...

You guys have been so helpful I wanted to let you know how it went. So this is the Miami half.

We met at the Miami Airport on Friday. Both of our American flights were equally late so we managed to arrive at the same time. We took a cab to the W where unfortunately our suite was not ready, but the W gave us a credit so we could have a few drinks by the pool. It was great to catch up, although I know after 10 hours on a plane he was ready to check in. When the suite was ready we checked in. It was an amazing suite too, which is always fun. That night I took him to Lure, which had great food and excellent drinks.

Saturday we had breakfast on the balcony overlooking the ocean. It's really hot in Miami, but with the ocean nearby and a slight breeze we decided to explore the city. I know he likes Forever XXI and American Apparel. I took him shopping and bought him tons of clothes. Luckily clothes at those places aren't very expensive! We had health juice at Juice and Java and both agreed we rather be eating burgers. So we went to Beer & Burger Joint. That afternoon we had a two hour airboat ride in the everglades. It was something I'd never done that he picked out. Afterwards we hung out in the W's adult pool, where we were fortunate to be the only two there. That night we went to OLA at Sanctuary, another excellent restaurant.

Sunday I took him to lunch at Sushi Samba. We went to the beach at the W where we spent the whole day. Miami Beach really is amazing and the W does a good job with their beachfront. That night we went out to a bar called Twist. Twist was fun, with some eye-candy strippers but laid back enough to be able to hang out and talk.

Monday we went for a morning run together. I'm used to running in the heat but he found it exhausting. So we turned it into a walk and made it to the south end of Miami Beach. Afterwards we went back for a few hours of beach time. To keep things from getting to intense, I left him for two days so that he could have some fun on his own.

He is an incredible person, travel companion, and ideal boyfriend. I've obviously left out the more intimate details of the trip but if you want more information or might want to hire him PM me.
