The word that first comes to mind after seeing it is ... What were they thinking? or Why? It's so bloated and so loud. I just didn't get it. I normally love Carey Mulligan but she seemed totally out of place. I don't care for Tobey or Leo and certainly don't think they they way I see those characters. I suppose if you love Luhrmann's over big, bloated films you will love this .... but it wasn't for me.

 

Some critic wrote .... "it's like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade as done by Liberace" or words to that effect.

David Denby in The New Yorker said essentially what operalover said. Jon Stewart said last night that he hears the movie is so good that they're thinking of turning it into a book!

I agree with the Liberace comment. For me it completely missed all the nuances of older versions.
