What's better for an escort, working for an agency or doing it by himself?

There's no one size fits all "better" arrangement. I like interacting with prospective clients myself, being accountable solely to the client, and not sharing the fee with an outside party. Others may like not fielding phone calls or paying for ads, and may appreciate whatever extra security going through an agency offers. I know one agency escort who loved that every time he left his day job, he'd call the agency to see where he was supposed to be at 7:00 that night. That all being said, I suspect the internet is having the same impact on escort agencies that it had on travel agencies: with direct access between the two principals, the middleman is getting squeezed out, for better or worse.

Well the old saying is "You have to start somewhere". An Agency can be a great starting point as most Successful Working Guys will say that started that way. But of course Great $$ is the reason for getting into the Biz and that's only going to come when you can Handle your own Biz! As long as you have to Pay a Middle Man for Pix's/Ads/Client Contacts...Financial Success will not be as good. But again it depends on your goals ?

The agency fees charged are not really a large percentage of the fee amount total for services rendered (by the better agencies). For the escort who has a "day job", handling the phone calls and placing the ads is a major relief. The added safety and time saving by screening out the nuts is a major reason to use an agency. Agencies can bring new business as well by refering clients to an escort or bring new clients who only hire through an agency; these clients can pay for the fee charged by providing extra business. One escort I know does not like to talk money with a client and is relieved that the agency does that for him. For many men, this takes much of the work out of getting clients and setting up the meetings.

This is a personal decision and the weighing of all of the factors just depends on the value placed on the individual factors.

As someone who hires through agencies, I do so because of the convience and time it saves me in telephone tag and a guarantee that the man hired will perform as advertised. Dave in California has suggested I not hire a specific escort or two and suggested others as he knows what I like; Stephen at Maximum did the same. In some cases, the escorts only work through the agency and even though I had personal contcts, meetings were always done through the agencies. While I am over it now, I was shy originally in hiring and felt easier in having a third person answer intimate questions; when I started hiring, I found it hard to ask someone directly: "Do you suck cock?" "Do you rim?" "Are you a bottom?" "So you swallow cum?". Now, this no longer gives me the same problem in direct talks but it is still easier to ask these questions of an agency.

The option of working through an agency has declined significantly in the past decade, I think. I wonder if there are agencies for male escorts outside the few major cities these days?

Seriously doubt it as that any Market Outside Major Citie's where there is $$ to be made is for the "Female of the Species".

Although I'm sure some have a "Guy On Call" for the BI/Gay Client. ;)
