What a thrill to see the great Frank Loesser's The Most Happy Fella" yesterday in NYC at the DiCapo Opera theater on the Upper East Side. The company performs this 2:45 musical in its 200 seat theater unamplified with a full orchestra. The story is simple: an older Napa Valley Italian gentleman on the look out for a mail order bride. What makes the musical so memorable is the Loessor songs like "Joey, Joey, Joey," "Standing on the Corner" and "My Heart is so Full of love" and many, many other gems in this 1950s hit.

Standouts in the cast include Michael Corvino as the lead, Tony, and Laura Hoffmeier as the witty best friend. There was some confusion about the female lead Molly Mustonen who had a bad cold. At some point (probably the beginning of Act Two) Mustonen was replaced by her understudy Christian Sineath. The understudy was fine, but not as good as Mustonen.

In addition to the small theater & pure voices and music, I enjoyed the very comfortable seats.
