The novel Savages, by Don Winslow, one of my favorite authors, is soon to be a major motion picture. It's about some Laguna beach surfers who like to deal drugs too, but the Mexican cartel has its own ideas on that. Readers who loved the characters will now be pleased to read The Kings of Cool: A Prequel to Savages, reviewed in today's NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/18/books/the-kings-of-cool-by-don-winslow.html?_r=1&ref=books

Winslow is the author of several top novels but my favorite is his story of drugs and Mexico: The Power of the Dog. It's a must read if you like fascinating novels, drugs, the drug war, Mexico, or just feel like a good book! Here is the Amazon summary of this novel with a rare almost-five star rating:

Book Description

Publication Date: May 9, 2006

From the bestselling author of Savages (now an Oliver Stone film).

An explosive novel of the drug trade, The Power of the Dog, takes you deep inside a world riddled with corruption, betrayal, and bloody revenge.

Art Montana is an obsessive DEA agent. The Barrera brothers are heirs to a drug empire. Nora Hayden is a jaded teenager who becomes a high-class hooker. Father Parada is a powerful and uncorruptable Catholic priest. Callan is an Irish kid from Hell’s kitchen who grows up to be a merciless hitman. And they are all trapped in the world of the Mexican drug Federación. From the streets of New York City to Mexico City and Tiajuana to the jungles of Central America, this is the war on drugs like you’ve never seen it.
