I travel a lot with my job and quite often I am sent to DC.

 

I like to hire when I travel since it breaks a tedious hotel stay, gives me something to playfully think about while I am at a boring lunch meeting and plus I just love the freedom of it!!

 

After a four week stint in Atlanta I am now being sent back to DC and so I starting looking at various ads on various sites.

 

DC has always been what I considered a weak market but with a few good men. However, when I started to look at my choices and saw a number of new faces I was amazed that their out call rates were ranging from $300 to $400 an hour ...and few of them were what I would call head turners or men that I would possibly hire.

 

To me $200 is the average I like to pay to play.

 

I guess these newcomers think that the DC market is so weak that they can charge NYC prices?

my thought are that many models are simply pricing themselves OUT of business in this economy and in this housing market. I know the temptation in the short run is to go high because there are clients who will pay 300-500 for one hour BUT these guys are unusual to say the least. Over the LONG RUN the way to be successful in this biz is to offer a fair rate and outstanding service. I remember when I broke into the biz as a rookie in south florida the ONLY way to make a NAME for yourself was to offer a rate BELOW market average. That way a new client might skip his regular model one week and experiment with me. Then when about 30 guys' experiment ended up with me being their new #1 provider my business started booming. Then I kept their rates low as anchor clients and began advertising a new higher rate which matched my competitors but the original clients rates were grandfathered in. Despite the still-lousy economy and the (in many areas) catastrophically bad housing market in the rest of the country, DC housing prices actually rose in 2011. If the cost of living is rising in DC, then the cost of everything else will follow. I still don't understand how any escort in an expensive market (NYC, San Francisco, DC, etc.) can charge just $200 an hour. For a city as pricey as DC (with all its fat-cat lobbyists making 7-figure salaries), I would think $250 would be the minimum, and $300 for the top-quality escorts.

I used to never think about prices much. They seemed to stay the same for so long. Well the 300 overnight did eventually translate into the 300 dollars an hour, however, I did sit up and take notice when I started seeing prices creeping into the 300-400 dollar range. I think at that rate you have to be more selective and it is harder to blow off a bad hire, if you just dropped 400-500 bucks.

Not sure how much they work, but I have never been to any escorts house or masseurs for that matter that would indicate that they made anywhere near that. If your numbers are correct, at close to 200k a year, it is actually like making somewhere around 300k because much of it is tax free.

Well, that $192,000 is before social security taxes, federal, state and maybe local taxes and health insurance of course. So, after all of that they get a good living, but there are no yachts in their future unless they are dating a 1% er.

Although I have no horse's-mouth info on how many appointments an escort has per week, 20 sounds kinda high. If you figure in those horrible dry spells inevitable to almost any business (escorts here post about bad stretches of just 1 or 2 clients a week), then an escort would have to be awfully busy in the good weeks to average 20 hours per week. I'd say 10-15 would be more the norm, but that's just my guess. It's not just happening in DC, I've noticed several popular escorts here in Texas (especially Austin, Dallas and Houston) who used to charge $200 to $220 for outcalls are now charging $250 to $300. Seems like the prices have gone up in the past couple months. I initially thought perhaps the increased gas prices justified the escorts' fee escalation, but not sure if that's the case. The price rises are an odd dynamic. As an escort, where rates around you start rising but you keep yours where they are, after awhile being on the low end of the spectrum looks bad, like you're a "low rent" escort. Think of it, if for example if you were scanning the NYC rentboy ads and came across a guy who still charged $150, you might wonder what was wrong with him. Is he ugly? Stale goods? Ate up? Otherwise why isn't he charging going rates?

 

It's a vicious cycle, and I'm not condoning it, but it's something I think escorts think about as the rates start creeping upwards.

 

As for why, I can't speak for the DC economy but I believe it is stronger than most, and as others have said with the election year there is probably additional money circulating in the economy as the campaigns ramp up. Here in SF the tech economy is strong and unemployment is lower than other places (8.1% last March, down from 9.5% a bit more than a year ago according to the Examiner). Also rents are climbing far and fast (increase of 13.2 percent from a year ago, per the Examiner) . I don't know enough about the DC economy but believe tech is a factor there, as well as NYC and some of those Texas examples.
