I'm amazed at how many blocked calls I receive on a daily basis, regardless of the time of day. I specifically state in my ad that "I do not and will not accept blocked call" yet I am inundated with them all the time. I've gotten them at 3:30am (I'm sleeping) and at 11:30am; it doesn't seem to matter when, but they still call anyway. Of course, they never leave a voicemail.

I would assume those are the same people that probably just look at your pictures and never even bother to read the text, just start callin' away....

Curious, does anyone else have this same issue happen as often as I do?

I found out that if I am out of the country and call my friends back home my number comes up as "unknown number" on their caller ID and I am not trying to block. Also some businesses and hotels come through as "Blocked number" when people call me and they are not trying to block their number. It's just how some systems work.

This is true. I have called from hotel phones before and the person on the other end says the call appears as "blocked" or "unknown" on their end.

Interesting, I had no idea this was possible, yet I know some places have their number "blocked" when they call, it's just set up that way. I wonder if there is any way to "combat" that, I'd hate to lose out on a potential meeting yet I'm also not going to risk anything by getting together with someone who won't even use a phone number, you know? I don't mean to be negative, by any means.

I'm not an escort and I get them all the time. I don't answer them, and as you describe they never leave a voice mail. Once in a great while, when I'm expecting to hear from a friend, I'll answer a blocked call and regret it. It's usually a robo call with bad timing.

I know that some cell phones used to default to blocking the number on outgoing calls. Some people won't realize that's going on, but you'd think they'd leave a message. Don't know if they still do that.

It (along with text messages) is one of the biggest troubles of the job. I simply never answer them. Out of 100 blocked calls I leave unanswered, I suspect I miss one legitimate booking. I'm very comfortable with that tradeoff. Thankfully, I'm able to set my phone not to ring when called from a blocked number, so the whackers off no longer wake me at all hours of the night. I just await the day cell phones can greet blocked calls with "the party you are trying to reach does not accept calls from blocked numbers" just as landlines are able to.

There may be some reasons that the system puts the call through as a blocked number, in which case I would hope he would leave a message with a number I can call back.

Yes. I've posted ads that very specifically state: "if you call from a blocked number and don't leave me contact info, I have no way of calling you back." My favorite are the ones who call from a blocked number and say "call me, dude" or "hey, it's me again, I'm back in town!" but don't leave a number.

I only get one or two blocked calls a week. I do get allot of text message and the majority of those who text book. I hate emails, emails rarely turn into sales. most those who email me don't or won't finalize by phone. I will only give my address out 3 ways. 1. i text it to you. 2 you call and i give it out to you. or 3, you call finalize the appointment from a unblocked number and then ask me to email it too you... NO one sets foot in my home without a number on the books

That would be AWESOME to set a cell phone to respond with that greeting for those calling on a blocked number. It is frustrating, there must be some way to set that on google voice, or maybe some computer coder geek can come up with a way for us to make that greeting, haha.

Thanks for all the replies, guys!

I have made calls from a hotel and it appeared to the person I was trying to call as blocked or unknown. However, I always leave the hotel number and room number, and if it someone I want to see, I leave my name as well. That way the person knows it is a legitimate call, even if it appears as "blocked" or unknown. Recently, I have been getting calls that appear as "out of area"... I never answer those and only less than 1% leave a message, so I know they are robo type calls, or solicitations. If someone is legitimate, they will leave a message with a phone number and ask you to call back.

I think Dan's got it. Not a bad idea to remind Clients to leave a message and number, especially if their phone is likely to come up "blocked" or, worse yet, from a PBX.

From JosephGa:

"I only get one or two blocked calls a week. I do get allot of text message and the majority of those who text book. Please do reassure we anxious ones that, for the most part, the phone number leaves the room, and your phone, rapidly after our person.

I completely agree with you, Diverdan, I wish there were more people that had the train of thought like you do!

a successful escort like Kevin in nyc can be selective and not answer blocked or witheld calls....yes....but if you are starting a business or are new in a local market I will give you a hint: ACCEPT BLOCKED CALLS. answer them. Over the years MANY of my BEST clients first called blocked. they don't know you JACK. They don't trust you yet. They are MARRIED and scared. take the call, be nice and you may make a great REGULAR client. As a successful long term guy I usually do not answer them but on a slow day I do. do I like them ? no! but I also don't like giving golden showers...but I have done it...

YES! i experience this and i post "NO BLOCKED CALLS AND NO LATE NIGHT CALLS" i still get them. i do turn off my phone when i sleep though cause no one ownes me and no one calls the shots for me and say when i have to work!!! some people are just selfish and don't care about following direction or taking others into consideration.

My voicemessage states I don't accept withheld/blocked numbers and to leave a message with their number or hotel details and I will call them back.

More worrying are payphone numbers !!!!!! Escorts simply forget about them but over here in the UK there is an iPhone app which lets you trace any payphone and so if you suspect he's ringing from one you can check it whilst chatting on the phone to him.

Guys who ring from payphones and claim they have no home or mobile phone are the ones to watch !!! These days, no one is without a phone.

Payphones aren't around here anymore I haven't seen one in about 3 years. But I use to get calls from guys that I would sneak around and try to call from pay phones.

My opinion on those that don't trust me to have their number is too get over it or move on. they don't trust me with their number but in return are expecting me to trust them as a stranger in my home.

I completely agree with you and this is one of the reasons why I will never answer blocked calls. Sure, I may miss out on an engagement with a new client, but it's not worth the risk to me if you can't have the decency to call me from a regular phone number. I have never been one to abuse the information, call you multiple times, texts, etc. I am very professional & discreet with personal information.

I just figured out how to set my google voice voicemail to say that I don't accept blocked calls and to leave me your name & contact info so I can call you back. If you don't leave it, there's no way for me to return the call. I'll be interested to see if this helps at all....

I love reading your posts, josephga, and I really mean that. Always helpful and I enjoy seeing things from two perspectives, which is the beauty (most of the time) of this forum. Thanks!

p.s. I've never had anyone ask me to send nude pics via the massage site. Oh, and for some reason that silly massage ad I was given for free (for a month) on manworks, it expired last week.....next thing I know, I had a few emails.....they renewed the damn thing for another 2 months for free. I still can't figure out why, maybe cause they don't have anyone using it, haha. I hardly have any hits on that ad in comparison to my escort ad....interesting.

I understand the sentiment expressed by joseph (and seconded by jack) that the a client should be willing to give the masseur/escort his phone number in exchange for getting the masseur/escort's address. You want to be as safe as you can, and I get that. But as a client, I would never give a phone number (at least not at this stage of my life) that could be traced to me directly or to my job or home. Although many masseurs and escorts are discreet and would never use that information in a way that would hurt me, the risk that a masseur or escort turns out to be crazy or tries to blackmail me or even that he might call at an inopportune time is too great for my risk tolerance. I only schedule with guys if my email address and google voice number I use to schedule appointments (which are differentnot from my primary personal email address and phone number) are sufficient. Like I said, I understand your position and why you do it, but there are a lot of great clients out there who are in my position.

I was about to reply and recommend you to get a google voice account, but it sounds like you've already made that leap, haha. Good to hear you utilize that and at least it can give "us" a better sense of safety on our end of things. Much better than having someone who refuses to share any information in order to schedule.

I also agree that there are many "crazies" out there, so you do have to protect yourself (client aspect) on all angles of things. There are also some crazy clients out there too, haha, but obviously you aren't in that small group :-)

Thanks for the input, it is appreciated.

When I first started I didn't know any better and took blocked numbers. I soon found out not everyone that called from a blocked number was bad news but everyone that was bad news came from a blocked number. I had a bad sales week in early 2009 and took a blocked call. guy gets on table and starts complaining. the truth is he hadn't read my ad and thought he was really coming for sex. he became verbally abusive I told him to get the fuck up off my table get dressed pay for wasting my time and get out.. since 1999 this is the only client I've had to toss out. I made the mistake and turned my back on him and was pepper sprayed in the face and kicked in the groin. the person behind that blocked number could very well be the untrusting married guy that turns into a life long client. Or it could be the guy that gets your address robs you when not at home. or the guy that beats the shit out of you or holds you up..

If I were a married guy, or even single but not out, I'd be very hesitant to give out identifying info. Take an extreme case: Ted Haggard (though Haggard was caught despite using a false name). If I belonged to an ultra-conservative church, worked for a company that donates to anti-gay causes, etc., I'd wonder if an escort/masseur might out or blackmail me. Whether Haggard deserved to be outed or not, "deserving" is a very slippery slope.

OTOH, I can see the escorts' perspective here; if nothing else, a client is much more likely to flake if you don't have his number--and possibly much worse. There's no easy solution to this one.

(I thought about starting a thread on Haggard and asking what escorts would have done in the same situation, but I figured it would cause too much controversy.)

But how is a Google voice number different from a blocked number when it comes to an escort's safety? Neither can be traced without a subpoena, so the type of scenario Joseph described can happen either way.
