I don't know anything about them, but their web site is certainly professionally done. Interesting that they focus on men who are involved in prostitution, most of whom they indicate have been abused, neglected, etc. I have some friends who may be able to find out more about this group. The name, "Emmaus" is certainly relevant if you know the scriptures about Paul's journey to Emmaus.

That was my impression. In addition, do they seem like a "Pray Away the Gay" organization, or not really?

That was my impression. And they certainly are focusing on the street hustlers, some of whom may be as they described: "These men have typically grown up in environments that include physical or sexual abuse, family alcoholism, drug abuse, and generational poverty. They have very few resources to draw on. They typically have no intact family or other support structure, poor education, and few marketable skills to offer prospective employers.". But that certainly doesn't fit any of the escorts I've seen.

Hustling on the street seems almost dead in most places. Does it really exist in significance in Chicago?

It didn't when I lived there nor has it appeared to exist on any of my recent visits. However, there is a huge homeless population. Perhaps they are making a correlation between "young homeless man" and "street hustler."

Like most cities it seems to be a much less common or at least less visible. Though for sure it still exists. Especially if you include transgender providers and even more so if you were to include guys dealing drugs along with dick.

While some streets still attract more trade than others I think a certain amount of solicitation happens on random streets in every city. When one is taking a long walk down a street is when the same car will pass by multiple times before pulling over to offer a ride.

Sometimes I see the Night Ministry ( thenightministry.org ) van setting up shop in various parts of the city.

Well as many homeless as there may be it is tiny compared with what one finds in Southern California. Due in large part to Chicago's relatively inhospitable winter. Even at is most populous I don't think our underground streets (like Lower Wacker) or rail yard tent cities are as big as what you see in parts of L.A. in places like The Nickel etc.

But the Emmaus ministries headquarters are in Uptown (a mile north of Boystown). Uptown has a bunch of half way houses, transitional living, shelters, and many at risk of being homeless. At one time (if not still) Uptown was considered to have the largest concentration of such facilities in the nation. Of course Uptown also has every other demographic imaginable from poor to rich, and frumpy to famous. And a good variety of ethnic restaurants and groceries and a handful of gay bars and businesses.

This is from the "Mission & Values" page on "Emmaus Ministries" website. (The "..."s are in the original text):

…God’s creative intent provides for sexual intimacy only in the context of heterosexual, monogamous, lifelong marriage, and thus excludes adultery, homosexuality, promiscuity, pornography, lust, etc.

…distinctions must be made between temptations, which are not in themselves sinful and may never lead to sin, and behavior, which is sin whether carried out in thought or action.

…God’s power enables all persons to grow into increasing freedom from their past. Many formerly promiscuous persons enter into a successful Christian marriage; others live as chaste and fulfilled single adults.

…many sexually promiscuous men and women become alienated from the Church, sometimes partly as a result of un-Christlike behavior of individuals within the Church body. We must endeavor to facilitate a restoration of the relationship between those individuals and the Body of Christ that is the Church.

…God has made us male or female, and no alterations to or defilement of the physical form can change that.

…prostitution is an act of exploitation, domination, debasement, and violence, and it should never be legitimized.

How ironic that while a number of us "aficionados" lament the passing of the street hustler era, here is a Christian ministry (with a staff of 15!) that seems to have no problem finding them. A board member with a street fetish might do well to mill about outside the Emmaus Ministries HQ ... "hey pal, can you believe those Bible-thumpin' freaks?? Guess they mean well, but kinda nutty, huh? So, uh, whatcha doin' later??"

I'm just sayin'.

BSR:

I think you've hit a nail on the head--magnificent logic, and well-said.

I remember once a hospital social worker in NYC who wanted to set up a treatment program for the mental health problems of dwarfs. The head of her department asked, "Where are we going to find any dwarfs?" She replied that it would be no problem as long as she had a large enough budget to advertise for dwarfs with mental health problems.

I found a Youtube video providing testimonies from those male street hustlers saved by Emmaus Ministries.

Guys, can you take a look at this, and provide some reactions? This would be very much appreciated.

Bible-thumping freak: "Warm room, hot meal and I'll listen if you want to talk. It's up to you."

Board member w/street fetish: "$75 for a blow job, $100 if you swallow. It's up to you."

I'm just sayin'.

sending this link along:

(Beautiful rendering of faith musically by an experienced soul~)

and... What I sing to myself, daily: [ The creative rendition of this song by two separate but, endearing musical artists/influences~ (and adding that, while I am completely enthralled and enticed by the example and radical, real historical reference/persona who was Jesus of Nazareth, I don't buy into the distorted/self-indulgent empowering, modern day, bastardized concept of that important historical figure~...)], I hope you can appreciate in, (take into consideration), the beauty meant in this song, (disregarding of any religious overtones or considerations... [take a listen]... where the idea is faith and recumbent conception of reconstitution of self in mind...).

Not any one of us is without hurt felt or unaffected by the ongoings of life~

(assert within yourself, the replacement in the song of the word "jesus" with "wisdom").

Healing is a human factor/condition for the greater sense of what we strive, wish for acceptance by or desire to be?

Strive and be faithful to the better things in life... Be all the best potential you can be~

No judgment on my part of the youtube link in the original thread... We all find our path in ways that make sense to us individually~

Find your way that works for you. Allow for the variance of the ways others find good path in themselves as they understand life to be~?

We are searching for our proper place~
