Puerto Rico overall has fallen out of favour as a destination over the year's. It never was a""Mecca for the Working Guys" other than maybe "Crap Shoot" Street Trade...

 

I doubt it will ever make a comeback. The "Welcome to My Island Campaign" Fizzled a long time ago as the Crime Rate just kept going up!

I had in the past thought about PR, it's warm farily cheap and feels like a foreign country whithout the passport, visas, and money hassles. Was there ever a gay scene? If so what happened?

Oh YES!!!! In the pre aids days, in the 1970s, in the pre-restoration of Old San Juan days, the old city just dripped of gay sex. Most of the gay bars, nightclubs and show bars were in the old city and you could pick up boys on the streets. The word was "there is no straight Puerto rican male". I knew one guy who only did PR cops and he never lacked for material. Ah, the Small World Bar, Bobby Ray, Main Street, the San Francisco Inn, La Vista, and more and more.

 

Then with the gentrification of OSJ the scene moved to Condado and Miramar. 80s discos, especially Batchelor. And then aids took a huge toll on the island and I lost a lot of friends.

 

There didn't seem to be much of an escort scene then because everybody was giving it away and the PR culture admires the older man, "papi" --- "papito".

 

When I became aware of the escorts in PR a few years ago they were almost all using Craig's List or the Downstairs Bar at the Condado Inn. Well, Craigs list is gone except for "theraputic massage" and the Downstairs Bar is now Siempre and mucho cleaned up. I have not seen a working boy there in about a year. But the island is still a great place to visit and you can find action there. The old city is one of the cultural treasures of the world. The island outside of San Juan is wonderful and refreshing... mountain villages, local festivals, remote beaches.

 

And for those who just want warm, it is guaranteed. The highest temperature for Old San Juan ever is 96 and the lowest 68. When Miami is 43, San Juan is 83.
