I think you hit the nail on the head, and very well put. Some of these descriptions are so odd as to seem humorous, but others--and precisely in your example inflicting pain on animals--demand on humanitarian grounds the full punishment of the law. Sexual freedom cannot extend to undesired injury to humans, or injury to animals. Counterarguments remind me of cults within the Mormon church who claim they have the right to marry multiple, underage female brides on the basis of unrestricted religious freedom. One would cringe if, in the era of gay marriage, we'd hear any stories about gay Mormons even suggesting such a notion

There is a fine line between judging and giving ones opinion. It seems, if someone doesnt agree with your opinion, they play the "judging card", when in fact that may not have been your intention at all. Whether we like to admit it or not, everyone judges someone or something EVERYDAY of their lives. It may be subtle, or more in your face. We all need to lighten up and realize, we are all diff, and have diff opinions, and live in a country that affords us the right to express it. As long as its not meant to intentionally HURT, its OK with me....

I think alot of it has to do with people trying to show they are "politically correct" by crying foul of an opinion THEY deem to be a judgement, which they "purport" not to condone. Sometimes, I believe peoples "outrage" is merely for show to prove to others they are GOOD People, when in fact they may have the same OPINION that they are publicly condemming.... The mind works in funny ways, and "perception" is important to many people. Please, again, this is my theory, so NO hate mail guys.....

I think we live in a perilous world, PC-wise. It's too easy to offend and take offense, even when common sense tells you that offense was not really meant.

 

Context is everything. Now, yes, I can see where calling a list of fetishes "sick shit" could be interpreted as derogatory, coupled with the fact that as we all know, it's very hard to establish the TONE of a statement on the web (happens all the time - emoticons help, but even those can be misleading at times). But at the same time, I saw it as, in part, a matter of context. We're all here talking about sex, and we even have a "Fetish Forum" topic section on the board. Given the poster, and given the general context of the subject on the board, the title struck me as provocative but not really offensive. It got my attention, and then when I saw what it was, I said "ok, I get it." Now, if this were some right-wing Christian forum (not to offned any right-wing Christians, lol, just to provide a contrasting situation) and this post appeared, I think we could agree the context would make the intent seem quite different. But it's not that, in OUR context.

 

This actually was on my mind the other day. I belong to an email list for opera recordings - and the heading of an email the other day, advertising a recording of Maria Callas singing Medea, read "hear Callas murder babies." At first, I did a bit of a double take - "wow - that's an edgy title - with all the child murders always in the news, that could really be offensive." And then I thought about it. You have to think that, even with murdering babies being a brutal thought, just about everyone receiving that email would have understood the context of the phrase. So again - provocative and attention-getting - absolutely. OFFENSIVE? Maybe not - at least not intentionally.

 

That said, I see two of my own favorite fetishes (armpits being one of them) not listed - what up with that? ;-) (And I believe they call that Axillaphilia.)
