I'm about to pick up and move.

But I've a "special" bureau to deal with. One draw is filled with CD's: another with DVD's and yes it's all porn. I want to take this all this "intellectual property" with me although not in its current format. I presume I can get a couple of external harddrives and begin copying; but, because I'm a bit technology impaired, I'd appreciate your good advice on which harddrives have the specs I'd need and what software I should use. I'm currently running MS XP on a ThinkPad (Told ya I was tech impaired!). Acquiring a MAC this is not an option: it's against the local religion.

Thanks

(I'm Assuming that you have a USB port on the Thinkpad; Check first)

Use any of the name brand SATA drives: Notebook drives top out at a little over $100 for 1TB. Example: http://www.pricewatch.com/gallery/hard_removable_drives/notebook_1tb 3.5 inch drives are a little under $100 for 2TB Example: http://www.pricewatch.com/gallery/hard_removable_drives/sata_2tb

Personally I prefer the laptop drives as they don't need a power brick and fit into a shirt pocket. I like to use a case for each. Example: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3743049&CatId=2781

However it is cheaper to use a USB dock for about $20 example:http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=USB+Sata+Dock&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=1714274043047601551&ei=kTWtTNzzKo_UtQPf0JTDDA&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CEsQ8wIwAg#

In either case Windows XP will see the drive automatically when you plug it into the USB Port however you'll probably need to format (Easy).

Ripping the DVD/CD I'll leave to Deej as I use one of them evil Macs and haven't used WinXP to do that for ages.

Note: Docks at this point are not good for 24x7 operation. After your done, eject and put your drive away! If your paranoid, put it back in the anti-static bag it came in.(I always practice safe cybersex!) ((Funny that in Cybersex you use protection after your done!)) :p

I don't copy DVDs so nothing to add.

But when I'm getting ready to move the very LAST thing I want to do is spend untold numbers of hours copying discs -- PARTICULARLY if it's something I haven't done before so there's a learning curve. Put them in a box and haul them to the destination, and then deal with them.

I'd prefer that but being monolingual, I'm not sure how I'd explain a crate full of DVDs like Muscle Pit (Colt), Pounding the Pavement (Lucas Entertainment) or any number of Titan and Raging Stallion titles to a Muslim customs inspector in the Far East.

Well, that's a horse of a different color.

Unless the move is permanent, have you considered storage? Hard disks are equally subject to search (and it's actually easier to do).

I have absolutely no idea if this idea is feasible or not, but I'm sure deej and the other techies can help sort it out. Could you zip the files, upload them to internet storage (Google?), and then download them after you get settled? Or is that approach equally subject to customs problems?
