Speaking of Kansas City

..

Funny thing you should mention KC. I will be coming for a visit shortly, and I just discovered the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park in checking out the web. I never heard of it before, but from the pictures it looks very interesting.

Does anyone know anything about it? Has anyone been there? How far from the Nelson-Atkins is it?

Anyone interesting in visiting this weekend?

dear karl-g,

the Nerman museum is interesting in that almost all of the art it displays is within 10 years old. very contemporary. right now the first floor has items up for their auction next weekend where it will sell works as a fund raiser with alot of "hot" national artists having works: dana schutz, ke-sook lee, allison schulnik, etc. if you go to their website and put your cursor over the artist name it will show the work. it is a distance from the nelson and the center city. part of their permanent collection is on the second floor and the rest scattered around the junior college (the gallery is part of the junior college).

near the nelson is the kemper which right now has a show of work by three generations of wyeths. an interesting show. the kemper has a great cafe and you should not miss it. speeking of food, the cafe in the nelson is great. the nelson just rehung the american collection and it has some nice "gems". part of the asian collection is closed for remodeling and the american indian collection reopens in november.

highly recommended is the world war one museum----really it is wonderful. also, the city market has a museum called "steamboat arabia" do yourself a favor and see it, too.

BigJoey,

Thanks for your suggestions. The Wyeth Exhibit sounds interesting. I had heard of the WWI Museum, but didn't know if it was worth it. Your recommendation is useful. One lunch at the Kemper and one lunch in the Renaissance court at the Nelson-Atkins sounds good.

I'm looking forward to an interesting and enjoyable trip.

trust me, the world war one museum is really very good. it is only a couple of years old and very high tech with lots of audio visual type of exhibits. it will really give a good understanding of the major events that echoed through the 20th century. this may sound crazy, but allow about three hours to see it all; it is not a quick run through type of place. they have a working world war one tank that is amazing.

now that lunch is taken care of, for dinner i suggest:

cafe europa

http://www.cafeeuropakc.com

(everything is home made, in crestwood, off the plaza)

webster house

http://www.websterhousekc.com

(one of the best, part of an antique shop in an old school house)

michael smith

1900 main 816-842-2202

(in the crossroads art district; try the banana split)

cafe trio

http://www.cafetriokc.com

(gay owned and very gay friendly, just off the plaza)

lidia's

816-221-3722

http://www.lidiasitaly.com

(wonderful sunday brunch; part of the new york city group from lidia)

the plaza has lots of places but mostly chains like ruth chris that are the same anywhere; while you are here, go local for something different. lots of good bar-b-que as well.

strongly suggest reservations at any of the above.
