LUSTIN GUY SHOULD BE THE WINNER !!

Cooper,

If I read the rules properly and Stock reopens on Sunday LUSTIN GUY should be the winner. Lusitn Guy will be the person who was the closest and DIDNT go past the opening date......Since I have watched some daytime TV Likembig would have lost because his date was to high and past the date of opening.

RE: LUSTIN GUY SHOULD BE THE WINNER !!

(Not that I have a chance in hell of winning the pool, but...)

I understood the winner would have selected a date

closest to the opening date but one not occurring in the past...which

means a guess of July 21 would not be eligible to win a July 23rd

grand re-opening since that date had come and gone...

In any case, I am anxious to have a brand new club to spend time in while in Montreal. Can't wait to hear the initial reviews from the group here.

Taz, Northwoods rules are very clear. The winner is the person who comes closest to the opening date without going PAST it. July 21st is PAST. If someone selected, July 28th, they would have been the winner if Stock actually opens this Sunday.

The Rules:

Enter by selecting and posting an opening date; only one person per date. The winner will be the person who selects the actual opening date, or if no one has selected the actual opening date, the winner will be the person who comes closest to the actual opening date WITHOUT GOING PAST IT (just like "The Price Is Right"). Entries will be accepted through

June 30th, 2006.

RE: The Rules are perfectly clear

I think Taz is correct.

The question turns on what the phrase "without going past it" mean. I think the clearest possible reading of that phrase means "on or before but not after".

In other words, suppose the target date turns out to be July 23 and three people had guessed July 21, 22 and 24.

* 22 is closer than 21, so 21 loses.

* 24 is just as close to 23 as 22 but 24 is PAST 23 so 24 is disqualified.

* 22 wins.

RE: The Rules are perfectly clear

When someone refers to a date as having "past" they are saying it comes before a certain date. Lustin Guys selection of July 21st has already past, therefore, if Stock opens on July 23rd, his selection is no long in contention. The next date that hasn't past is August 15th.

If the rules stated the closest date, then Lustin Guy would have won if Stock actually opens this Sunday, however, the rules are very specific by saying "wihout going past".

I hope this helps.

RE: The Rules are perfectly clear

OK Guys,

I have to chime in on this one. I think Northwoods should clarify what he meant when he wrote the rules. It is easy to interpret (or misinterpret) the rules either way.

On Price is Right if you guessed an amount/price HIGHER than the actual value of the merchandise you lost. In this case I think the price is equal to the "opening date". Lustinguy did not go over!

So who won then?

"* 22 is closer than 21, so 21 loses.

* 24 is just as close to 23 as 22 but 24 is PAST 23 so 24 is

disqualified.

* 22 wins."

This reasoning might work when dealing with numbers but not with a calendar. For example, if Stock Bar opens on July 23rd, which dates have already past? Certainly not July 24th. Therefore, July 24th would not be disqualified and July 22nd would be disqualified.

Hope this helps.

RE: The Rules are perfectly clear

Even if the rules are subject to two interpretations, it is clear from previous posts that they were being interpreted in the way Cooper says. That is because everytime we passed a date which someone had guessed, their name was crossed off. So on July 21 Lustin's name is crossed off, since the Stock is still not open. Likembig's name is next, that's why I said before he appeared to be the winner. There should be no argument on this, but then again, knowing this board... }(

RE: The Rules are perfectly clear

The way MY calander works is AUGUST is PAST JULY....

As for the "price is right" theory if you went over/past the price you lost......August is past July....

RE: The Rules are perfectly clear

With all due respect, I think you're reading it backwards:

[blockquote]Enter by selecting and posting an opening date; only one person per date. The winner will be the person who selects the actual opening date, or if no one has selected the actual opening date, the winner will be the person who comes closest to the actual opening date WITHOUT GOING PAST IT (just like "The Price Is Right"). Entries will be accepted through June 30th, 2006.[/blockquote]

If it opens on July 23 and someone has guessed July 22, they have not gone past the opening date (i.e., their guess is BEFORE the actual opening date). The actual opening date has gone past their guess, since it occurs later in time, but their guess remains before the opening date and, by definition, not past it.

Someone whose guess is a date that occurs after the opening date has guessed a later date, which means they have gone past the opening and, consequently, lose.

I agree Northridge ought to clarify it. But I think only reasonable way to interpret "comes closest to the actual opening date without going past it" is to take it to mean "guess a date that is the closest to the actual opening date without coming after the actual opening date", meaning a date that occurs on or before the opening date -- not after it.

RE: The Rules are perfectly clear

Taz: In dealing with time we use the terms; past, present, and future.

The 3 dates in question are:

July 21st (past), July 23rd (present), and August 15 (future).

If the rules state without going past it, the only date which has past is July 21. Simply put, the club didn't open on that date. The next closest date without passing it is August 15th.

I hope this helps.

RE: The Rules are perfectly clear

Perhaps using it in a sentence would help you better understand the meaning of "without going past it".

Rats, July 21st has PAST and the club still hasn't opened. I guess I lost that bet.

Webster defines past as:

1. having ended just before the present time

2. earlier or former

If we changed past to earlier, we could say July 21st is earlier than July 23rd. Therefore it's past.

I hope this helps

Actually, it does, because it helps explain the difference in thinking. But I still think you're wrong. :-)

I think you are confusing the comparison. The rules aren't comparing the date the person guessed with the current date; instead, they are comparing the date the person guessed with the actual date of the club's reopening. And you have to be sure to get the comparison in the right order.

The rules use "it" to refer to "the club's opening date." We could change the sentence in the rules by taking out 'it' and the sentence would read: The winner will be the person who comes closest to the actual opening date WITHOUT GOING PAST the actual opening date.

This is not the same as "The winner will be the person who comes closest to the actual opening date without the opening date going past their guessed date."

(This is all beginning to remind me of "what the meaning of 'is' is.)

If we write "Taz guessed July 22, which is past the club's opening date of July 23rd", it's clear that the sentence doesn't make sense, since July 22 is not past July 23. However, had someone guessed July 24, we'd have: "Mr. X guessed July 24, which is past the club's opening date of July 23rd." Clearly, in this case, the sentence is true, because 7/24 is past 7/23 (just as 7/22 is not past 7/23).

I still think that if it opens on 7/23, Tas wins. :-)

RE: The Rules are perfectly clear

Actually BG you're wrong :-)

In the rules, "it" refers to the opening date. Therefore if the opening date is July 23, all the dates before "it" are in the past. Please check your Mr. Webster for the definition of past in relationship to time.

I hope this helps.
