Sorry to do this because I know it's been discussed a million times - I have no personal knowledge of this whatsoever but, on the campfire website forum there is an entry that says one of the Gaiety dancers said last night that this is the last week for the Gaiety.

Indeed, this is going to be quite a blow to the dancing/escort community as the Gaiety provided a major showcase for their talent(s). Here in Montreal, a lot of the dancers from Campus and Stock (as well as some from Remingtons in Toronto) made many pilgrimages down to New York to earn some foreign exchange. These earnings have declined somewhat as the US$ has been tanking for the last two years but this is much worse.

The upside is that perhaps we will be seeing some of the Gaiety dancers here in Montreal in the near future. Hopefully they have their passports in order. ;)

ALOT of the Gaiety Guys from Canada were "Strippers" to begin with. They did not Escort or do what a ""Good Escort" can get into. The Few that had Sugar Daddies in NYC, will now become Very Exspensive Imports! OR just make less money, and stay in Canada.. Yes the Days of the Public Stripper Hardon is over! :+ :+ :+

Hello. I'm a reporter for the NY Blade (honestly) and am writing an article about the closing of the Gaiety. I never had the pleasure of going, although I do remember falling in love with the Village Voice ads in the early 1980's, and am looking for people to share a few stories I can use for the article. You can either post them here, or you can email them to me at jwithers@nyblade.com. I'll be working on the article from now until Wed, so if you have any wild Gaiety stories make sure I get them before Wednesday morning because my editor wants the story then. Thanks in advance.

Hey all. After making my editor curse my name, the Gaiety article is turned in. Most of you will probably be cursing my name when it comes out on Friday! When it's up, I'll come back with the link. Thanks for your help!

peace

RE: Gaiety closing and what's up?

Foxy and I passed by the Gaiety yesterday. Yes, it's closed and the sign remains on the door... We were surprised to see that both Howard Johnson's and the Duffy theatre (also in the same building) were still open. Only the G has been locked. In fact, Howard Johnson's has just re-done their window with a Spring display and the Duffy Theatre was holding a matinee. No signs on either door about closing.... Also, there are no indications of any renovations. Now I'm starting to wonder, why did the G close so quickly?... Were they asked to leave or were they forced to close?

IMHO..Possibly a Different type of Lease or Arrangement with the owners? Which the Owners of the Businesses concerned, are HOLDING the Owner to? The "Quick Scrawl" on the front door, of the "G" by the Management, after "30 yrs", sure doesn't look like a "Thoughtful" Goodbye to all the Customers, who kept the place going, probably well after it's time had come either. "KINKO'S" makes nice Goodbye Signs! Some people have Class, some don't! :+

Maybe that explains why the place was gutted by Denise, maybe the new landlord offerd a short term lease at a much higher rate and Denise turned it down....and was concerned about a new gaiety opening in her space....She even took the HVAC....

RE: Gaiety closing and what's up?

This is too weird , Now I am starting to wonder if there was any truth to a rumor that I heard from a friend of mine and patron of the Gaiety for over 20 years, He told me that a week befor the G closed a dancer was approached and by asked for his information on doing a private supposely this client was a undercover cop ,denise caught wind of the conversation and asked to talk to the dancer unfortunaly that is all I know about it , My friend also went on to tell that a few days later undercover cops poseing as dancers ( No they did Not dance they where supposely getting audtion info ) and talking to other

dancers about there routines and such ... A few days later and the G is closed for Good. I personally think its BS and that the G s lease was up and that then owner wanted to close the place for good, I hate rumors and ever wrote to one of the mebers on this board that is a suposed good friend of Denise that was way over a week agao and I have never heard from him soooo I decided to shair what I have heard

even if it is a bunch of Bull.

RE: Gaiety closing and what's up?

The lease expiring sounds real to me if the place was 30 years old.

30 years is a time for some leases. If the building was purchased the new landlord prob wanted double or triple in rent and D couldnt afford it.

I suspect that if the police did what was said the place would have been "red stickered" and closed rather than a scheduled close on Denise's terms.

Maybe some day Neo will write a book and we will know the truth.

I still have hope, D does have ALL the equipment........

RE: Gaiety closing and what's up?

I still think that there is something fishy about the Gaiety closing.

Even if the building were sold to new owners (and I think that it was), you always get a 30, 60 or 90 day notice. Maybe Denise was on a month-to-month lease already, but that doesn't make sense.

Regardless, most leases don't expire on the 17th of the month! If all the tenants closed, then it would make some sense, but the other tenants staying open makes me think that something else is going on with Denise. Maybe after 30 years, she just took her money and retired. She didn't give the dancers any notice, but she must have had more than a 24 hour notice of the closing. It just doesn't smell right.

I assumed that the stuff in the theatre would have been removed by the new landlord, and junked. But there is some beleif that Denise took it. That also doesn't make any sense. I'm still watching for that mylar curtain to appear on E-Bay.

The "Gaiety" being a "Cash Only" Biz. I am sure Denise's Money will last alot longer than the "Interest" in why she packed it in! The only one who might still show some interest, in time might be the IRS...I am sure they think she was a little old lady living on S.S. LOL:+

I am not a Neo fan but I do not think he can write English and tell the whole story.

Yes Denise has all the equipment including the seats. Remember she did build the entire interior from scratch.

Still there is no decision to reopen or stay closed at this point.

NYC has changed over the years as we all know. A reopening is going to be a tough haul in today's Downtown Disney-York City.

I will most likely be one of the first to post new good or bad news, whatever happens. Denise and I are in contact often. I knew about the closing 3 months ago but didn't know the exact date. I would never reveal anything in anyway unless she wanted me to do so.

I miss the club very much too. Including other things that occupied my time to the fullest!

;(

Thanks

Apparently there was a Choice.."It was made". Might as well stick to it.. "G" Closing is now becoming a little Redundant! And Definitely OLD NEWS! Let's all just hope VDN keeps his Album going? We kind of got stuck on "J".... I DEFINITELY would have liked to "get stuck" on Jeff after those Great Photos of his! LOL:+

RE: Gaiety closing and what's up?

Unfortunately, I had a bite to eat with a Gay Police friend last night. He works in an precinct office on the East Side. What he told me makes sense.

The City knew for quite awhile that the G will soon be history. They did not have to place any pressure on the place to close it. Stella's, Buddy's LaFleurs is where the city's efforts were to close these businesses. He did tell me that if any business reopening or otherwise condones male prostitution, it will be closed. Especially in Midtown. The forces would have shut the G down a while ago if they did not see an end to it on its own. Denise is lucky the city did not step in earlier.

My opinion, I don't see a new G in the future anytime soon, especially mid town. According to my pencil pusher gay policeman, if there is any business that opens similar to the G or bars like La Fleurs, it will be forced to close by any means possible. He mentioned to undercover bust, immigration dealing with the dancers and even the IRS.

So how about the woman prostitutes? I guess they have their own problems which I do not hear about being a gay fellow!

Anyone with friends with our heroes in blue, please tell me this is not so.

Long live the G (in memory)Hope not.

HEY VDN, I AM WAITING FOR THE N's

Tony;

Did your policeman friend tell you who was behind the crackdown on male prostitution in mid-town. Is it Bloomberg, or Disney? And why now all of a sudden. I never saw that even Stella's hurt the neighborhood much. And why the double standard witht the femal strip clubs (oh never mind).
