While you are down in Fort Lauderdale for boys, beach, and sun this winter, you can also enjoy excellent cuisine. There are two relatively new gay restaurants which are not in the usual lists of "gay" restaurants in Hotspots and other publications. But they are definitely gay and assuredly very good restaurants.

The Herban Kitchen is at 2823 E. Oakland, just east of Bayview. They are doubling their size next week, which is very welcome. Since opening, they have had only twelve tables/booths, and they fill quickly almost every night. They are now taking over the space next door. All food is prepared in the restaurant: soups, salad dressing, breads, etc. and all is excellent. Waiters are all cute/handsome, attentive, and gay. Clientele is mostly gay. Decor is informal and sort of French provincial, but food is high class imaginative American. The chicken breast with pecan stuffing is a specialty. Reservations recommended. Parking is free and plentiful.

The Hi-Life Cafe is tucked away in a mini-mall at 3000 N. Federal Highway (one minute from the Herban Kitchen). Turn into the mall, beneath the trees, and the cafe is all the way at the end, in a charming setting. It too fills up every night with knowledgeable customers. The interior is woodlined and dark and cozy. The owners and wait staff and most of the customers are gay. The waiters are in black pants and shirts and as cute/handsome as they ban be. They are friendly, attentive, and fun. The salmon is perhaps the best you will ever have, and the chicken breast with Granny Smith apple slices is exceptional. Very pleasant place to have a fine meal and good conversation and flirt if you like, in a great gay atmosphere. Free and plentiful parking. Reservations recommended.

Both restaurants are a ten minute drive from the Boadwalk Stripper Bar and within two minutes of the beach. John Lukas is a cute new twink from Chicago who just started at the Boardwalk.

I've dined at The Herban Kitchen and second the motion. One of the most unusual treats is that they bring all their homemade salad dressings to the table. That way you can sample all of them, which are for sale if available. My favorite is the mango vinaigrette.

The Herban Kitchen also has a twilight dinner menu until 6:00 PM. This menu is a bit less expensive and includes coffee and dessert. Coffee and dessert are extra on the regular menu. The menu is somewhat more limited, but there are still many items from which to choose, much more than most early specials.

If you want to read about the restaurant and look at their menus, go to:
