I just spent a lot of time writing a reply to a post. I previewed it, made some changes, previewed it again, decided it was OK, then pressed POST (no, I did not accidently hit preview again). I went back to the original thread, but my post wasn't there. I tried the process again, but still no post. This is the second time it has happened recently. What is going on?

You may have been the victim of the post timeout.

From the moment you click "reply" until you click "post" there's like an egg timer running on the server. Take too long and you may hit that timeout (although I *thought* he had it set sufficiently long after some tweaking about 5 years ago). That should give you a message, though.

Or the database may have had a blond moment.

A little routine maintenance should cover the latter, but have patience. Resources (meaning Daddy) are spread thin just now.

Charlie --

When I remember, I compose my replies using a word processor offline, then copy and paste, to avoid what happened too you.

Had the same thing happen to me a few times on this, and other, sites. I'm glad for Deej's explanation, as I was starting to take it personally.

If you don't want to go the word processor route, you can just select and copy your post before you hit the "post" button. If things go kerflooey, all you have to do is re-open the post window, paste your text back in, and try, try again.

(Don't copy anything else in the meantime, though, as your copied text is stored in volatile clipboard memory and can be overwritten easily and without warning. Pasting it into a word processor is safer.)

  • 2 weeks later...

It means: when I start writing a post in one window, then subsequently I open a second window with the MC (to search for a reference for instance), when I come back to the first window and hit the post button, it simply wouldn't post anything.

Hope this is clearer now.

That actually makes sense.

Opening the second page gets a new cookie. Seeing a mismatched session/cookie, the server apparently assumes you're one of those insidious spam-bots that floods any message board as soon as they figure out how to post and just ignores you.

Hey, it's better than being flooded with V!@gra spam. ;-)

>Thanks, Steven--that was exactly what occurred when it happened to me.

You're welcome, Charlie. I'm glad that the mystery is being demystified with Deej's help. :)
