I am about to be in the market again for a phone and want to stick with the smart phone Treo. During my window shopping I noticed that the 700 series for the Treo the phone can be used as a modem. Right now I have a 650 which over all I have been quite happy with. I was wondering if the 650 is modem capeable like it's younger 700 series siblings? I've tried searching but can't come up with anything and I am getting sleepy and will soon become cranky if I can't find the info.

Hugs,

Greg

I don't know anything about the palm based smartphones, but the Microsoft based ones work nicely as modems. You want to make sure you have a data plan, of course, otherwise it can cost an arm, leg and testicle. You don't necessarily need the 'laptop connect' plans though.

I'm very happy with Cingular's (oops, now AT&T--AGAIN) new 3G stuff, which seems to have just gone active in the LA area. I get over 800K/s down, not too far from DSL speeds. That's through USB cable though, connecting wirelessly through bluetooth usually limits the max speed. Still get 200-300K/s in areas with just their older 'edge' service. Pretty good!

If you're buying a new one and looking at MS based smartphones you might want to wait for Windows Mobile 6 which is just starting to ship.
