In the last five hours, I have received about 600 virus alerts from received email. This is up significantly from even yesterday.

It is my normal practice to completely separate my email machine (Mac) from my production machine (Windows), so in that regards, I practice even more extreme Safe-Cyber Sex than the normal user. But I know that a lot of you are a bit more trusting than I am.

Most of the Viruses are a single line messages that prompt you to open an attached file. They use a variety of “Social Engineering” techniques to convince you to do so. It is a mistake to blindly open any attachment.

If you get a short email from an unknown source with an attachment, it is extremely important that you treat it like the plague. If you get a one liner from someone that you know that has a attachment, check with them before opening the attachment.

M4M will not normally send an email with attachments. If you get a message purporting to be from Male4Malescorts.com, and it has an attachment, assume that it is a virus. The only time that I will attach a file is when I've explained in the email what it is or unless I have let you know before hand to expect it.

If you don't have an anti-virus program, you really should get one. If you have one, take a few moments to check that it is up-to-date.

Question for Daddy

Hi Daddy:

You mention that you use a Mac for email. I've been a Mac user since 1984, and so far, knock on wood, I've never encountered a single virus, trojan horse, or worm on any of my Mac systems. I'm curious to know what your experience has been. Have you ever had an "infected" Mac?

I know that there are not as many viruses written on the Mac side of things. Have I just been lucky, or what?

I've only been using the Mac for Email for about six months. In the time, I've found my iMac to be the perfect email machine. However, my business partner has used his forever (or at least the last 14 years that I've known him) and has yet to get a virus.

According to him, There are two "Theoretical" Mac based viruses that have been hypothesized and one that actually that got out into the wild. Somebody else may chime in with more info, but compared to the Windows basically none-existent.

Yes and No! Apple has been steadily growing in market share; it is only a matter of time until the virus writers start targeting them.

For me the cheapest and easiest solution is a .mac subscription and using the virex that you download from there. For now, I'm being paranoid, but in this day and age, it's worth the effort. Knowing that a particular email has a Windows based virus means that it’s less likely that I’ll inadvertently pass it on.

BTW: Apple released a "Mega-patch" today, it's probably time to update your machine. Another benefit of the Mac is that you don't have to update nearly as often!

Daddy:

Thanks for the reply. I check through Software Update daily for new stuff from Apple, but it didn't list anything today, at least on my machine. I'll check a couple of other sources.
