After several years of reading about Brazil & Rio,

I am about to take plunge. I arrive in Rio next

Tuesday (5/16) for nine days.

Firstly - a big thank you - there is a wealth of

useful information in this forum and it is greatly

appreciated.

Secondly – While I have read the FAQs, I still have

a few questions regarding dress: I have traveled

extensively throughout the world and don’t want to

look like the typical American tourist; however, I

am what I am and no one is going to mistake me as a

Brazilian. I do want to dress so that I am at least

as inconspicuous as possible. I am a very white,

mid-40’s slightly overweight, balding guy. I usually

dress casually. I intend to wear black, gray or khaki

pants/ shorts which I think is okay. I have a question

in regards to shirts: Are polo shirts okay? I also

sometimes wear a white t-shirt with a pale unbuttoned

oxford shirt over it – is that okay? Regarding footwear

– I intend to wear black walking sneakers – is that okay?

Because I am bald on top, I wear a ball cap – no logo,

neutral color – is that okay – if not is there any other

type of hat which would be better? There is no need for

me to bring a tie is there? Are flippers okay as footwear

to go from the hotel to the beach?

Thirdly – Is anyone going to be in Rio next week and

would like to get together – help show this novice

around? I’m staying at the Hotel Atlantico 5/16-5/25.

Lastly – I noticed that the Rio Gay Guides and their

related escort sites are not working. Anybody know if

this is a computer glitch or if they are defunct?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers,

Fisher :7

I usually dress casually. I intend to wear black, gray or khaki pants/ shorts which I think is okay.

RESPONSE: You'll do better with khaki. You don't see much black in Rio, except maybe at night at the clubs. Jeans are worn everywhere, too.

I have a question in regards to shirts: Are polo shirts okay?

RESPONSE: The answer is YES.

I also sometimes wear a white t-shirt with a pale unbuttoned oxford shirt over it – is that okay?

RESPONSE: It's not a style widely seen in Rio. It'll make you look like a foreigner. Just wear shorts or jeans with a t-shirt or polo shirt. A regular short-sleeved sport shirt is considered dressy.

Regarding footwear I intend to wear black walking sneakers – is that okay?

RESPONSE: Athletic shoes of many colors are very widely worn. In Copacabana and Ipanema you can also wear flip-flops, although a few upscale restaurants won't let you in wearing them.

Because I am bald on top, I wear a ball cap – no logo,

neutral color – is that okay – if not is there any other

type of hat which would be better?

RESPONSE: A ball cap is perfectly fine; they're used a lot in Rio.

There is no need for me to bring a tie is there?

RESPONSE: No. Not unless you intend to do business in Rio. Otherwise, for something "dressy" just wear slacks and a sport shirt.

Are flippers okay as footwear to go from the hotel to the beach?

RESPONSE: Absolutely. If you like to use speed-o type swimwear, it's customary to put on a pair of regular bermuda shorts to walk to the beach, then slip out of them when you get there. With bermudas and a T-shirt you can enter any restaurant, bar or shop after the beach without having to go home to change.

Lastly – I noticed that the Rio Gay Guides and their related escort sites are not working. Anybody know if this is a computer glitch or if they are defunct?

RESPONSE: Not sure. Feel free to visit http://www.gaytravelbrazil.com and, if you need guides, send an e-mail to info@gaytravelbrazil.com explaining what you need and the dates.

Have a great trip! I'm sure you'll have a truly memorable time! :D

fisher..boa dia...i am in rio de janiero until the 17th....here is a few talking points i would like to share with you:

1. the weather is now fall...we have been wearing khaki shorts (from the gap) and flip flops and or nike /puma white sneakers during the day....bring a light jacket..like a jean jacket of cotton zip front...it can be windy at times...and an umbrella (we forgot)....there has been rain for the past 2 days...today is suppose to be sunny. check their weather on line ....for a 10 day report...

2. do you speak any portuguese? outside of your hotel the average person does not speak english..its not like being in western europe...brush up on a few phrases....get a portuguese book.

3. on my first visit here we met a driver named alberto...he speaks fluent english and has his own fiat station wagon his fee was 50 Reais an hour to drive us around. which at the current exchange rate is $25.00 still a bargain compared to a lincoln towncar and driver in nyc which costs 75.00 an hour..his celluar 011552199155253

also there is a former "working boy" from point 202 named fabiano that now has his own car...he has been mentioned in this section a while back...his english is very minimal , very sweet.....i met him in january when he drove me from point 202 back to our apt in ipanema...when we left point 202 last night..he was out in front so we reconnected and he drove us back to ipanema. he said that if we wanted him to be our driver/guide he would charge 150 Reais from 10:00a.m. to 7:00a.m.0115594565223 celluar, 0115536621636 home. he loves to sing the frankie valli song.."cant take my eyes off of you"

so you have 2 choices options for a driver...

4. as for "garatos"....its just like other m4m'ers have stated....discuss the sexual activities you want to participate in "activo" "passivio", "massagem" they all say the are "activo"...but when discussed they will bottom....they always start their prices high. like 200 reais 100 reais...you should pay around 80, 70 or 60 depending on your activity requirement my friend last night paid 50 reais for a massage...but received a bit extra...so you never know.....as americans, europeans, and australians...we are seen as the gold mine when we arrive...the boys will definitely be trying to work you over....some are aggressive in their nature others subtle and sweet...

5. saunas - the first night we were here we went to club 117 it is in the gloria section of rio...a bit far...the trip there was 40 reais with tip on the way back it was 25 reais...on the way up we were taken the long way there....club 117 is by far the largest in space...but i did not like the layout everythin on 3 floors spread outt...the boys linger in several places....the sauna, television room, stairwell they don't congregate in the refreshment area like in estaco and point 202...so you have to go walking around looking for them... the boys are younger in age...different shades....of brown...heights, fit bodies.... i met a beautifull young man of 26 years of age...muscular body...not too pumped....i paid 70 reais for kissing and mutal masturbation...and he came...i was very satisfied!!!!!

last night we went to point 202. smaller venue...the boys all congregate enmasse in the refreshment area on the first floor...the boys are a bit older...more pumped up with steroids..and more agressive . there is a television room, sauna, and steam room that they al seem to pop in and visit .....i meet a fair skinned young man there...i paid him 80 reais...for kissing and mutual masturbation..he came..he was not as interactive as the one from club 117...or kisser...i should have "tested' him in the steam room when i had the opportunity... i was not satisfied.... i believe you are staying at the atlantico...it is just a quick walk away from your hotel...no need for a cab..

we also met a beautifull black man...there that was very sweet....we want to arrange an rendevous with him today....outside of the sauna...

i would like to go to the othe spa ...spazio 18...as for spa time...i think 6:00p.m. is prime time..to arrive at them...

on a note....i am filipino 49 years old in good shape 5"5" i look like a budhist version of bd wong.. the boys first think i am japanese......my best friend that i am traveling with is 37 cuban/american. 6'2" strapping..and is goregous a head turner he is often mistaken as brazilian... the two of use are such different types the brazilians do not know what to exdpect.....

when the other "boys" see us together they assume the following:

boyfriend or body guard.....we chuckle about that so when i am asked what is he i say "bodyguard" in portuguese. it is not uncommon for the brazilian older gay men to have a bodyguard or companion escort them to the saunas...

i hope this information is helpfull to you...this is my third time to rio...we were just here in january....my jorge wanted to spend his 38th birthday on monday here in rio....we both love it here..this is a special place..its not for everyone...i love the energy....vibe, edgieness...culture...just being here...

another one...do not bring an expensive watch with you....i left my rolex at home and have my inexpensive tommy hilfiger watch that i brought...

if you have any questions please e-mail...ciao:-)

As a so-called "old timer" or seasoned traveler to Brasil, (sixth time this coming October)-- I've always paid the majority of guys at the various saunas mentioned in the above response--R$50 plus a tip of R$20 if the guy and I have had a great time. The R$50 has always been discussed prior to our going to the cabine.

A few times I've shelled out R$100, but this was definitely a mistake except for my being with Anderson at Club117 on a Sunday last October; the guy "fucked face" so expertly that he left me spinning for days. Also, I've known him for almost two years and really had the "super hots" for him. I received what he wanted to give, and I didn't mind the fee that he charged; he even had the release that he yearned... :9

To "the first timer" please read many of the sources that have been here for a while; also go to http://www.GayBrazilTravel.com and read all pertinent responses and threads there. In doing so your trip should be one that you'll forever remember. You probably will want to return to Brasil again and to many more cities and towns and villages that prevail in this beautiful and engaging land!

Back home - damn it!

Thanks again to everyone who replied.

I returned from my trip to Rio safe & sated. }(

To say I had a great time is an understatement.

Rio has replaced Montreal as my favorite city.

The details of my trip can be read over at:

http://www.GayBrazilTravel.com in the forum section,

under Hot Tales, under Travel Journal. :9

Saúde, :7

RE: Back home - damn it!

Fisher, I read your in-depth synopsis and tremendously appreciated it! Muito Obrigado! I also wrote a response at http://www.GayBrazilTravel.com, printed it, reread and edited, but did not post. In it I cordially disagreed with you and Drey regarding hiring someone to escort and advise you while one is at the various saunas.

When I had my first sauna experience in October 2002,I did it alone and primarily used the sound information that I had gleaned from this particular site. Now similar and quite useful information prevails at http://www.GayBrazilTravel.com.

I must say that if one is not too fluent in Brasilian Portuguese, hire a guide (male or female) to escort you to the various venues of a cultural nature and to the neighborhods that exist there. I found out about the guides almost six months after I had made and aborted much of my first trip. From then on I have had a guide to assist me in my many nonsexual adventures.

But, again, to each his own. And I truly, truly appreciate your having taken the time to write your in-depth assessment. :9

RE: Back home - damn it!

I agree with Axiom since I also did the saunas without a guide on my 1st trip to Rio. I had read information on the board and was quite comfortable taking the plunge. With my very limited Spanish and a lot of smiles and hand gestures I had a great time. I also finished up one night at Le Boy and met a very hot young guy who didn`t speak a word of English and we finished up having a very late night hookup at one of the "luv hotels". No $$ involved except for the room cost.

:-) :-)
