Anyone been to Santo Domingo this year

Hi there,

I think i've read every post on the D.R. & was wondering if anyone has been this season.

It seems the Bar Phoenix, the hustler bar has closed and it would be helpfull to know the going rate to pay the guys. I'm staying at the Mecure Comrcial and have no clue what to pay the taxi driver. Any new info would be appreciated.:-)

If you have read all the posts on Santo Domingo then you are pretty much up to date. The Phoenix Bar did not close, it changed owners. It is very elegant now with a lounge on the second floor and rooftop dining. The only problem is that hardly anyone goes there anymore. All the guys are at the Sports Bar. At present, going rates may be anywhere from 800 to 1000 pesos (23.00-30.00USD)for the guys. Some will ask for 2000-3000! Just say, "No,gracias." and watch the rate come down! A trip from the airport to the city is around 25-30USD. You should settle on a price before getting in the car/taxi, whatever. Doesn't your hotel provide pick-up at the airport? Thank you. I kinda thought the Sports Bar was the place now but wasn't sure. The Mercure Comercial dosen't have a website so I guess they don't. I hope they are still gay friendly.:9

 

One more question, do the strippers hustle as well? They look pretty hot!

 

Part of my trip falls on Easter (4/5-4/12) and I remember being in San Jose, Costa Rica during Easter week and all the bars were actually chained closed by the police. I hope this is not the case in SDQ!

I am in Santo Domingo now and will be here until March 23.The place where I am staying does airport pick up for $30.00 If you are going to be here during the time I am ,I can give you a little tour. Let me see...the strippers may 'escort' if you can get your hands on one. You would have to wait until one finishes dancing which is usually very late because the bar wants customers to buy drinks as much as possible. Usually, after the show, the place empties out. Second, many years ago, eveything was closed for Holy Week as in most of Latin America. Now, they only close on Holy Friday although the city does seem a bit calmer than usual during that time.
