Despite the decline in the U.S. dollar, many of us continue to return to Brazil again and again and will continue to do so. At this writing, the dollar is trading at 1 USD = 2.17580 BRL (minus 3% conversion fees and minus 1% ATM fees). Therefore, the true exchange rate is less than 2.17580.

In view of the forgoing facts, it might be worth a stop over in Sao Paulo to visit a money changer. There is a money changer not far from Bourbon Hotel trading at 1 USD = 2.40 BRL. This money changer (cambio) does not charge a conversion fee.

If you bring in sufficient currency to exchange and if you enjoy visiting both Rio and Sao Paulo, stopping off first in Sao Paulo could make it worth your while for monetary reasons.

You cannot get these favorable rates in Rio de Janeiro. In fact, I know of only one cambio in Sao Paulo who still gives the 2.40 rate (at least he did as of this morning).

In the meantime, one must wonder what good things are happening (aside from their people) that could cause Brazils currency to increase in value over the USD to the level it has.

When you factor in Brazil's inflation together with the decline in the exchange rate of the USD, it now costs more than twice than what it cost just one and one-half years ago for similar goods in Brazil.

This in not a pretty picture.
