I would suggest you stay in Buenos Aires at

Design Suites

Marcelo T de Alvear 1683

phone +54 11 4814 8723

It's a smart, well-run hotel in Recoleta, a good area. It does not have many rooms but they are large. It offers a decent breakfast. The reception and security staff are fine about guests, but then I was open with them about being a gay man and having a friend to stay. I would meet my guest in reception or come in with him from a night out (and I like my hotel to be secure and not let anyone wander in)

Check their website http://www.designhotels.com

I have stayed there before and will stay there again in October. I pay about US$100 per night. There are cheaper hotels in Buenos Aires and some very much more expensive. I did once stay at the Howard Johnson Florida where the manager, Daniel Porce, was very nice but I did not like the location and though the breakfast was free, it was poor.

Remember all hotels charge a tourist tax of 21% on top of their stated rate.

The Design Suites is in a good area of BA -- near the corner of Santa Fe and Callao. There isn't a gay area of BA as such, but if there were, this would be the #1 candidate.

I find the reviews of hotels on TripAdvisor very helpful. There is the usual number of absurdities -- someone found a hair on a sink, and their vacation was ruined -- and quite a lot of the "I know a good hotel when I see one and this wasn't it" attitude, but there is a lot of very pertinent and sometimes quite detailed and helpful information. In the case of the Design Suites, it seems that there is a distinct difference between the smaller and larger rooms that you might like to take into consideration. They also rank the hotels in each city according to their reviews, and I enjoy a little fantasy time thinking about the great hotels I can't afford. In BA, there are only a couple that I can't, the place is so unbelievably inexpensive.

Apparently there is a Howard Johnson's Hotel somewhere near Florida Ave which has a gay escort book available at the front desk and obviously is gay firendly. I have read about this but the link I have is not working. Rates were $40US per night and it looked very decent. Does anyone know this hotel?

Otherwise I have to confess staying in BA at some of the larger chain hotels such as the Crown Plaza, Sheraton BA Convention, Park Lane and Intercontinental.

Of all of these I would highly recommend the Sheraton Convention Hotel, a true classic 60s property but nicely updated, if only for the wonderful pool, sundeck and gym---it is probably the best in the city by price and overall facilities and the rates can be attractive at about $110 US per night depending on the dates (and you earn SPG or airline points to boot) but I have noted rates are going up each year since the economic crisis when you could get a room there for a mere $75US.

I have never had any troubles with guests there or at any of these properties. Still there are cheaper hotels to be had and in more popular locations as well.

The other option I have considered but not done yet is to rent an apt. I often do this in Europe and it is great if you get a good one in a good location . There are lots available in BA---see the website GayGuide listed in another section of this thread. They will help you and as well the english language newspaper in BA has a ton of ads for apartments. This makes sense if you are staying for a week or longer but you will not likely have a sundeck or pool. Note few hotels have these either, certainly the Intercontinental does not and it is not in a good location either.

Howard Johnson's Florida Mall

No longer encourages guests, who are interested in playing like they have in the recent past.

A good location in general, but not really close in for the 'fun' bars and restaurants.

RE: Howard Johnson's Florida Mall

If you stay at a Howard Johnson Hotel in Buenos Aires, stay at the DaVinci; I was there for almost eight nights: ...had three guests...no problemo. Check previous threads for details because I discussed the situation at the HJ Florida before I left the States on the 22nd of September. - Axiom -

RE: Howard Johnson's Florida Mall

I stayed at the HJ Florida recently and had absolutely NO problem with guests. The rooms are large and well-appointed. I guess it depends on what you mean by ``encourages``. I didn´t see flags welcoming fags (couldn´t resist) but I had some good BA dick while there!!

RE: Howard Johnson's Florida Mall

For my escorts I used the websites that prevail. A book apparently did not exist at the HJDaVinci although I met Daniel there one evening who told me that some guys were there being interviewed for photos. Where these pics will be posted is unknown to me although Daniel has a site with a few escorts. Note previous threads for his initial address.

I had really wanted to meet Andres who has his own website and has reviews at M4M and detailed info in the archives. This was not meant to be since he was out of town during the time that I was in BA. He is at the site of Daniel Porce.

(Since I am typing on a foreign computer--I do not know how to access the apostrophe. That is the reason for the formal language...|)
