Dominican Update

I just returned a couple of days ago from a week in the Dominican Republic. For those of us who like uncut, latino guys, the DR is the way to go. There are some new places to go to in Santo Domingo like a new 'sports bar' where, for the price of a cold beer, you can check out the hot guys playing pool and grabbing their balls (both kinds) for your entertainment. The owner is gay and the guys know fully well what you are there for. So, you smile, make a comment on a good play or a missed shot and you're on your way...

 

Boca Chica Beach is good for a day trip. It is about a 30 minute drive from the city. At first glance, it may seem a somewhat chaotic mix of small bars, souvenir shops, and restaurants. Go on a weekday when it is calmer and find a bar/restaurant on the beach side. Get a table, order a cold Presidente and enjoy the eye candy! Granted, there are a lot of vendors, but if you are not interested just say 'No, gracias' and they will be on their way. Take your eye drops as you might strain your eyes trying to take in all the guys passing by in their speedos and adjusting their crotches once they notice you are on to them. Sooner or later, they will pass by again just to make sure that they got their signals right the first time. Now, it's your move...

 

Nightlife in Santo Domingo begins at about midnight and goes on until the sun comes up. There is no curfew or mandated closing time. As long as there are paying customers, the games go on. Usually, the first place to hit will be the Sports Bar to get warmed up, then on to Jay Dee's disco, and if you are really into it, at about 3:00 am, you may go on to Arena disco until the sun comes up. Sure, you may have gotten lucky way before this and be in your hotel room already with a hot, Dominican papi, but, if not, like Scarlett said, "Tomorrow is another day!"...;-)

Escorts (yeah, right...)in Santo Domingo are now expecting from 800 to 1,000 pesos for their company. That is anywhere from $28 to $35 depending on the exchange rate. Some will ask for more as in any other place. Of course, you must settle on how much $$ before taking one to your room with you. Once at the hotel, front desk will require that he leave some ID with them which he may retreive on his way out.

 

There is no difference in short term or overnight charges in Santo Domingo. If you pick up a guy at a bar one night and take him to your hotel room, he will probably leave once the deed is done. Some may stay until morning (if you want)and may have another go at it, but the agreed $$ will be the same. Santo Domingo is not Rio, where he may lose money if he leaves a sauna with you. On the contrary, most will feel lucky to have scored for the night. Never, in all my years of visiting Santo Domingo, has any guy asked me for more $$ because he stayed until the next day!

Which Hotel did you stay at?

This time around, I decided to stay with Anthony Montgomery at his new apartment building. His website is http://www.monaga.com and is very complete in all info concerning gay Santo Domingo. The apts. are in the Colonial Zone and within walking distance of all the bar/discos and other places of (cultural)interest.

 

Another option would be the Duque de Wellington hotel. They have redecorated and still welcome gay clientele (sometime back there was some debate on this). I went there to see a friend and the manager scolded me for not staying with them. Their website is http://www.hotelduque.8k.com The Duque is a bit farther away from the Colonial Zone and you may need a car to get back and forth.

If you do not stay at Anthony's new apartment complex, I'd highly recommend your staying at the Caribe Colonial Hotel which is in the heart of the zona colonial (the beautiful and picturesque old part of town). ...stayed there along with others during the DomnicanIslandHeat soiree in February. Guests are welcome and must leave their id at the desk; ...nicely appointed rooms, great location, attentive personnel, fair breakfast, and is also within walking distance to all gay/gay friendly venues.

I, too, want to thank you for your great update; I also would like to recommend again that you guys who are interested in the DR to check out Monago.com. Anthony, the webmaster, has really updated his site. Accompanying his site is a gallery section. You will go wild just viewing those gorgeous men or varying sizes, colors, etc.....

 

One Dominican who escorts and who has been reviewed sent me a rather enticing email last summer. I wanted to board a plane immediately but could not. Hope he still looks as good when I return as he presently does.

 

I do want to go back to the DR. Remember I am messed up for life after having that horrendous fall into the drainage area last year (February) which but a big crunch into the remainder of my trip when I was there.

So, fellows, as one cyberfriend related to me before I left the States, beware of the holes and disrepair of sidewalks, curbs, and streets.

 

I had a particular person on my mind and definitely was not watching where I was going, thus the fall and the agony and future expensive medical needs. (I'm walking now with a slight limp, have difficulty ascending and descending steps but hope to become 95% in this area for the remainder of my life.)
