Art and Shopping

 

Not wanting to let my friend Firecat down, I promised him that I would do some tourist things as opposed to just the saunas on this trip. With my new husband who leaves me tomorrow, that has been easy. Yesterday we went to several art galleries as well as the night art fair in Copacabana beach on the weekends only. I found some nice art work and bought 2 pieces that I enjoyed.

 

Today, we went to the hippie fair and that is a must for any of you who have not been. It is in Ipanema and if you ask any taxi driver, they know where it is and will take you. At the outdoor market, they have all kinds of nice handcrafted items. I purchased a nice bronze statue that I liked that went along with the one I purchased last year. It started out at 450R and then went to 400R and then to 350R and then to 300 and then to 200R and then to 150R and then to 120R and then to 100R and I could not say no. It was bigger than the one I purchased last year for 100US. As Gringo said when I bought it that I needed to wait and walk away and look. I didn't heed his advise last year and the artist got a nice salary that day. I remembered it today and the further I walked the more he came down till we were over 100 feet from his tent and he had it all wrapped up for me.

 

I also found a beautiful painting for 650R that I loved and wanted. I thought they would come down on it as well but they did not and I did not buy it. When I tried to return to find it, I could not find that area again and got lost so I gave up. We ate lunch at a nice pizza place across the street from the fair and it was great and cheap!

 

We headed to Barra for New York City Center to go to the movies. That shopping center is wonderful and amazing. It is by far my favorite mall in Rio. I will be back there often. I had a nice hair cut and shave for less than 40R and bought a few items there as well. The movie theater was big and had 18 cinemas. The concierge found the movie we wanted to see and made sure we got there in time to get the tickets.

 

I will return to that mall often as I did enjoy it throughly.

 

The traffic back to my hotel was horrible and it took forever but we had a nice taxi guy who took us up the mountain and back down again and saved a ton of time sitting in bumper to bumper.

 

My time with my new "husband" is almost over and tomorrow he goes back to his family. I am a bit sad and dreading the night. Even though he does not speak any english he makes it a joy to wake up each day! If I get the energy tomorrow, I will hit some more of the saunas.

 

So Firecat, just for you, I am doing more tourist things! Are you happy?

Oz, since you have the pleasure and joy of being in this wonderful land and city for five weeks, if I might suggest, I'd do a helicopter over Rio with a friend and take marvelous pics with your digital. If you do this, board the helicopter at the dock. Your hotel coincerge (sp) should be able to tell you what I mean. Also, I'd do Lapa on a Friday night with a local only (who can speak some or a lot of English), go to Nieteroi (sp) on a Saturday and to that Guggenheim-like museum. I really liked the structure; I couldn't rave about the art collection per se; afterwards have lunch at a quaint place. Again, do this with another or others. I'd take in "the Christ" and Sugarloaf now before the crowds begin ascending on Rio for Carnival.

 

I've been to the latter two venues all the times that I've visited Rio; I was indeed quite disappointed when I went to "the Christ" on a weekday in October; it wasn't crowded at all but was engulfed by thick fog, thus being absolutely futile for picture taking; that is the only reason I went there. When I went in October of 2003-- it wasn't crowded, but during Carnaval it was packed.

 

Another place worthy of visiting more than once is Santa Teresa/ I've been twice with my carioca guide and have had lunch in two unusual restaurants in the area. I find this place to be rather romantic and intriguing, and I love the many views from the innumerable vistas which make for magnificent photos.

 

 

 

 

Just thought I'd add the above in hopes that you'd honor your good friend's advice. Your doing these activities would further enable you to enhance your trip to its fullest. Continue to enjoy for self and for me! :-) Axiom-

Consider a day trip to Paqueta. It is about an hour via slow ferry (hydrofoil 20 minutes is faster). The fare is $R3 slow, $R6 fast. The island is very quaint. No cars are allowed, but you can get around via a horse and buggy taxi. Take someone special, hang out on the beach, do lunch, have a great time. Oh yes, take someone special.

Summary of first 9 days

 

Well, my first nine days in Rio are up and I am off to Sao Paulo tomorrow. I have had a wonderful time in Rio and I'll be back in little over a week. A few thoughts on my time here.

 

First, I have met some absolutely amazing guys. I had forgotten how much beauty exists in this city and how much fun time with the beautiful people can be. I have had only 4 boys into my hotel room at night but I have had a few more than that at the saunas.

 

Without a doubt my favorite sauna is 117. The place is clean, well run, has great boys and always busy. The boys there are less demanding and less aggressive than the other bars and I do feel more comfortable there. It is a short distance from the other saunas but it is well worth the effort. I have gotten there early most days and stayed for 3-7 hours. I just love my time there. It is also from here that I have taken all the boys from my hotel room I think they run a nice place and I trust if I take someone home, they will be ok.

 

My least favorite was Point 202. The guys there are hot and sexy. But, I hate being taken advantage of and the management tried to rip me off twice with the bill at the end of the day. When they got to know me and that I would be a regular, they stopped but they also knew I would check each bill for absolute accuracy. I had some nice guys there in the rooms upstairs. I did feel like the guys there were more hustlers than 117 but it may just be the ones I met.

 

I enjoyed Rogers a few times and was sorely disappointed with it other times. I met one amazing guy there so it was worth the money spent. It is not cheap there and to go in and only find 5 guys working was a disappointment once.

 

Spa 78 was fun but not as clean as the other venues. I found a guy I had fun with but the room was not the nicest. The place was in an area I did not feel comfortable. That being said, I did go there a few times anyway. I was always sure to tell the nice ladies at the front to get me a taxi.

 

I met some great customers at 117 that I have spent some time with and that made for a pleasant experience as well. Plus, the Boy Bingo is fun and I won something there but wasn't really sure what.

 

Nine days have come and gone fast. I have had a great time so far and I am looking forward to Sao Paulo.

Alterosas Sauna

 

Today I went to:

It is a bit away from the Center of the city. I took a hotel car and had them wait for me. That was at the suggestion of the hotel as they said the neighborhood was not very good.

 

I have been to Alterosas on several occassions. The place is in a neighborhood that is farily poor. There are very few foreigners there and most of the customers are Brazilian. As soon as I got there, word spread that an American was there and to double the prices. The going rate at the club is 30R for a roll in the hay.

 

On the first floor is the locker and the showers. The showers are back to back and there were a tons of boys and men there showering and playing. There are also a few dark rooms and a few rooms where guys were jerking off. They have free rooms off of the showers for those that do not want to pay the fee for a room.

 

The rooms are not that nice and mine did not have a bathroom or shower even thought I requested the suite. I am not sure if the other rooms have showers or not as everytime I have been, I have gotten a room without a shower. The cost for the room was 15R.

 

The entrance fee to Alterosas is 25R. Soda's are 2.50R.

 

As the day I went was a Saturday, there were tons of boys there. The place was packed with cute guys. Most were larger build and muscular. Most were just straight guys from the neighborhood who were looking for some extra cash. The majority I talked to were tops only and I had trouble finding a bottom. I did have a friend with me who is a Brazilian and he finally called a boy over and talked to him and told him if he bottomed for me that I would not tell anyone he did that. There seems to be an attitude there for foreigners and that we are going there to take away the guys from the natives. I think that is stupid and crazy but that is the way they think. All in all, the place is fun. It is not a beautiful clean establishment. It is a bit nasty and dirty but sexy and naughty at the same time. They had many sexy boys and it is worth a visit. I was told the best time to get there is on the weekends at 2pm. I did and I had a good time.
