I am planning on going to Santo Domingo at the end of the month. I am looking for a guest friendly hotel in Santo Domingo. The main hotel I found was the Duque De Wellington but they had some bad reviews regarding safety, does anyone know how the security is now.

Another problem they had was a new owner is now charging for guests and there aren't any men hanging around the lobby anymore. Has any of this changed, and if men are not hanging in the lobby, where can I find someone in the afternoon if I do not want to wait until some of the clubs open.

Next month I will be spending a week or more in Santo Domingo and will be staying at Hotel Caribe, one of the hotels that will be housing others who will be attending this special event. The promoter of the event stated that this hotel is definitely friendly to its guests and subsequently the guests that they choose to bring there.

I'd also suggest that you search Monaga.com. Anthony, the owner of a guest house, a separate entity, is one of the men who will be sponsoring next month's event; he is also an American who lives in NYC as well as SDQ.

Note all of the great information and the fantastic links that accompany his website. (I've emailed Anthony on three occasions as well as spoken to him via his cel phone!)

Please report back here once you've had this anticipated experience.

I just got back this afternoon from a week in Santo Domingo. I stayed at Casa Monaga. Let's be frank, it's a small hotel with about 7 rooms and is no big deal. However, Anthony (the owner) is a great guy and will do whatever he can to see that you have a good and safe time. He is about to buy a larger property because he is renting the building where he is now. He has a big event coming up in February and told me that he already had over 200 reservations. Attendees will be put up in several hotels with no problems taking "guests" up to their room. He also owns a club/disco which he is going to use for the occasion and has 17 strippers lined up for those who attend. I also suggest that you go to his website http://www.monaga.com and check it out. Happy Hunting!

A word on the Duque de Wellington Hotel. I went there several times this week to see some friends from NYC who were staying there. The place was packed with gay guests and the young men who follow them. They have always charged for "guests" that you take to your room; this is nothing new...It used to be 100 pesos = $3.00...big deal! As to security, some 2nd and 3rd floor rooms have sliding glass doors which lead out to small terraces. Apparently, some thieves climbed up to the terraces and broke into these rooms at some time in the past. Now they have installed iron grates to protect the sliding glass doors. Oh, and there is no "new" owner, Emilio and his significant other are still running the place. I suggest that you do your hoework before you decide where to stay. Good Luck!
