A project to use "taxpayers" money to cure gays in Rio was recently defeated. Even though, it's a triumph for gay rights, it shows that Rio is not a blatantly gay mecca, i.e. San Francisco or Provincetown. Walking down the streets holding hands and public displays of affection are not socially acceptable. In the context of the saunas and Corujinha's, of course, the norm exceeds expections, but don't go to Rio thinking that it's a totally gay-friendly environment.

Save your kisses for the saunas and/or Coruijinhas. :-)

Loved it when someone said "why isn't there a cure for the evangelists!"

Rio these days is no more homophobic than any other major cosmopolitan city in the Western world, and much less so than many. The whopping margin of defeat for this measure in the state legislature indicates that. And there are many positive, pro-gay legal and legislative developments in Brazil.

Evangelicals are a growing group in Latin America and have become a significant voting bloc in Brazil. The current governor of the state of Rio and her hubby (the ex-governor) are evangelicals and have been courting that voting bloc. Fortunately, everyone seems to be getting thoroughly sick and tired of them and it's doubtful they'll be able to hold onto power in the next election.

I hope tri is right. In the local Brazilian newspapers, you can sense the strong presence of evangelicals since they buy a fair amount of ad space for their bookstores and churches. It seems so at odds with the Brazilian spirit that we know and love.
