Pharmacies in Rio?

Last week I was in a pharmacy in Rio to get Sungulair for a friend in the U.S. where it is 3X the cost in Rio. While I was at the counter 2 other Americans were buying Viagra and Valium, both without prescriptions.

The pharmacy in question was on Av. Copacabana behind the Copacabana Palace hotel, so they may be used to having foreigners come in asking for stuff. I was surprised that they asked no questions about the Valium. Many drugs that require a prescription in the U.S. or Europe can be bought without one in much of Latin America, but a line is often drawn on drugs that are habit-forming, and Valium certainly can be one of those!

 

The worst that will happen if you try buying something that requires a prescription is that they'll say "no." If this is something you really need, it would be a good idea to bring it from home.

 

REMEMBER: If you take controlled medications back to your home country without a prescription, you could find yourself in some real trouble at Customs upon arrival. A word to the wise. . .
