Hi. Let me preface this by saying that there is a lot of great info on this site and that I have read the majority of the archives and FAQ's but did not find exactly what I was looking for. If it is there, I really apologize.

I am going to Rio and wanted to hire a guy that speaks a little English to accompany me around. He would not be a tour guide. He would go out for lunch, dinner, shopping, etc., with me. Then we might go out to the clubs and back to the hotel for an overnight. I expect that the hours would be 3 p.m. to 8 a.m. Could you give me an idea of what would be a fair price for his time per day? I want to be very fair but want to avoid the situation that everyone here speaks about- paying out-of-line with the going rates to the detriment of everyone else. I know that meals, admissions, gifts, etc., are extras, happily given. BTW, an agency quoted me US $100 per hour.

Finally, is it easier to arrange this sort of thing once I am down there or is it necessary to do it before I leave the US? Is it something that can be done at the saunas (I did see the FAQ about the overnights but nothing about an extended time.) Thanks. TBT

I have done almost the same hours, gave or take one or two and I paid $150 Reias one time and $200 Reias the other this last trip, that is for the WHOLE time, not Per Hour! I don't understand why anyone uses the agencies in Rio, they are ridiculously over priced.

It is appropriate for you to pay for food, drinks and admission. That would probably run somewhere around $75. reias depending on whether the guy you take drinks red bull($9.00 Reias ea.)

I will be in Rio Nov. 6th to 10th

On my first visit last year, on my second night I meet Wan Hallen. He came home with me that night and we never did discuss a "price". The next day I gave him $R100 and he was happy. As many of you know, Wan Hallen has been with me ever since. Initially, while I know WH liked me and was very comfortable with me, if I did not have an ATM card I would have never got to 1st base. On my first trip, I felt obligated to give him money every day or every other day. He went everywhere with me (except the saunas) and I of course paid. It was wonderful having a beautiful garroto on my arm, going to some of the nicest restaurants and venues in Rio. He was with me for 17 days and I spent less on him than I would have paid for a weekend escort in the US. When I left, I gave him the rest of my reals, which was about $R1000.It was worth every cent as you simply do not know how happy WH has made me.

On my second visit, which was for 3 weeks, I did not give him daily money but still took very good care of him. We went shopping and I gladly bought him all kinds of things. I paid for his Brazilian passport. Again, he went every where with us, and beleive me it is really nice to have a studly, 6'2" Brazilian garrto with you. The few times a local seemed poised to give us a hassel, Wan Hallen stood right up to them. He looked over every restaurant check and made sure everything was in order. When I returned to the US, I gave him $R1500. When I arrived, he was waiting for me in the lobby of the Atlantico and insisted on going to the airport with me. I probably spent $R3500 on WH on the second visit, again in the range of what I would spend for a weekend with an American escort.

My best advise is for you to wait until you get to Rio. Within a day or two, you will have several candidates to act as your escort. Several of us will be in Rio at the time, and we can certainly make recommendations to you.

I am arriving on November 4th and staying for one month. We will be making several side trips, including I hope to Buenos Aires for a few days. Does anyone have an idea on what the r/t fare, Rio/ BA runs? Also, what airline has the best fares?

RE: B.A. Excursion

You should be able to get a RT fare from Rio to B.A. for around US$300 or less. Aerolineas Argentinas has the best fares (it's now privately owned and run by Marsans, the huge and very competitive Spanish travel conglomerate). Aerolineas also has convenient flight schedules. It's a 3.5 hour flight. Carlo or any other travel agent can get your tickets.

Unless you're using mileage/points at another hotel chain, I really do recommend the HoJo. It's location at the Plaza San Martín end of Florida street is excellent, close to the airline bus terminal, shopping and restaurants, and within walking distance of many attractions. To get anywhere else, cabs are extremely cheap (about half the price of cabs in Rio). Rooms at the HoJo are spacious, the hotel is attractive (in the stripped-down, post-modern style) and it's by far the gay-friendliest place in town. Contact Roberto (vdagp@yahoo.com.ar) to get the best rate. In dollars it should be in the range of US$65 - 70 per night. A generous breakfast is included (not always the case in Argentine hotels). Remind him to be sure the hotel has a gay welcome package available for you at check-in. It'll have maps of gay attractions, discount coupons, etc.

If for some other reason you don't want to stay at the HoJo, there are zillions of package tours that offer a flight and 3 -4 nights at a hotel in B.A. Again, check with Carlo or any other travel agent about packages. However, I can't speak personally to the quality of the 3-star hotels included in the cheaper packages.

Most of the guys I've had overnight were pleased with R$100 (with maybe an extra R$20 tip if they were really good).

For "all-day" company of the kind you're describing, R$150 sounds appropriate. (Most of the guys won't earn more than that in a night at the sauna.) If your experience is exceptional, you can tip an extra R$50. Meals, transportation, admissions, of course, are on you.

In all cases be clear beforehand about expectations and what you're offering to avoid misunderstandings later. Have someone who speaks Portuguese help you, if necessary, to be sure everyone is on the same wave-length.

Have fun!

Thanks Big Daddy and Tri for the helping words. Big Daddy - it sounds like you found yourself a winner. Good for you. I think you are right and that I will wait until I get down to Rio to set everything up. Maybe we could meet up soon after I get there and you could give me a few pointers, particularly because it seems that the force has been with you? And, if possible, you could let me know who is safe and not. The last thing I want to do is to be cashless in Rio. Would it be OK to email you and let you know where I am staying? I don't have a telephone number yet but maybe I could take yours. Thanks again. TBT
