I am on my first trip to Rio next week and certainly looking forward to it.

I have seen many warnings on this board about picking up guys on the beach--in effect DON'T DO IT!!! Fair enough.

Although I certainly plan to enjoy the sauna scene, what if I meet the guy of my dreams at some of the other gay establishments. Is anyone else in Rio safe outside of the Sauna's?

I get the impression from rerading this board that alot of people have had bad experiences in these settings--or is it just a few? I am quite well travelled, 6'3" and generally able to handle myself. I tend to prefer smaller leaner guys anyway. Am I taking my life in my hands picking up a guy at the other gay establishments?

I have met many guys at the restaurant Corujinhas, and a couple at LeBoy and never had a problem. Saying that, one caveat, it's not a question of size, whether they are bodybuilders or twinks, most of these incidents, it wasn't a huge muscular garato overpowering a smaller client! Two friends of mine here in L.A. went over last New Years, I spent alot of time with them telling them everything that we tell everyone here on the board. Go to the sauans, don't pick anyone up off the beach, etc. Well, both these guys have BAD Hearing! They are both in their early 40's both very muscular and figured they could take care of them selves. They actually woke up, stripped naked, in Downtown RIO !!! the last thing they remember is talking to some guys on the beach and drinking a coke! Typically, the 3 incidents I know about personally, the guys put the "goodnight cinderalla" drug in their drink, it works fast and your totally OUT for 8 hours.

If you're new in Rio, try (if possible) going to places like LeBoy or Corujinha with other M4Mers, or trusted Brazilian friends. Check with them before you go with a guy, to see if they know him. Also use common sense and trust your own instincts. Is the guy unusually friendly? Is he extremely anxious to get you to take him back to your hotel? Did he put the moves on you first? Did he initiate the talk about going back to your place? These might be warning signs.

Whatever you do, when you go out DO NOT take your passport, your hotel key, nor all your money, jewelry and credit cards. Take only the money you'll need and perhaps one credit card (Visa is the most widely accepted in Brazil). Don't take a new pick-up back to your hotel/apartment. Go to a rooms-by-the-hour "motel" or to one of the non-escort saunas. (There is one attached to LeBoy.) This may not protect you 100% from the "Good Night, Cinderalla" doping trick, but it will help limit any possible losses.

Like everywhere else, 99% of the people you meet in Brazil are honest, which is why most visitors have no problems there. Unfortunately, there's that other 1% that a few people run into, so that's why you need to be prudent and exercise common sense. That's especially the case if you're new to Brazil and/or you don't speak Portuguese. Without being familiar with the language and culture you're going to be more vulnerable, so caution is advisable. Of course, if you meet the handsome, studly heir to a big Brazilian fortune who invites you back to his penthouse in Ipanema you don't have much to worry about! The guys who want to rob you don't want to take you to their place. They want to go to your place, where your money and cameras and computers and other personal belongings are. That's another possible tip-off!
