One of my friends had money stolen last night in the apartment, and when he confronted the guy about it, he was told to either give him another$500 reias or he was going to call the police...and the guy did call the police!

you can read the account and see pic of this guy so you can avoid him when you go down there by going to our Yahoo group at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Riotravel When the management of Pointe and Estacau heard about this, they immediately permently banned him from both saunas. They deserve credit for responding like this.

Can someone review the legalities/penalities of hiring in Brazil. Tri? Tom? Anyone?

Tri can give you the whole lowdown on it, but this is what I Do Know:

It's Legal as long as the person is over 18, which is why it is safer for first or even second timers to Brazil to go to the saunas! They verify the ages. They have told me that if the guy looks young they will even require 2 forms of I.D. If you are picking someone up at Corujinhas or LeBoby, check their I.D. if there is any doubt!

The Saunas are Legal as long as they don't make money from the sex act itself. The owner of Pointe told me that is why the boys get charged admission, the saunas only make money off the admissions, room rentals, drink and food sales, they get nothing from what you pay the boys. Prostitution is legal, pimping is not!

BTW, there are many more Girl(straight) saunas in Rio then gay and they charge about 3 times as much!

Tom is right. Prostitution is not illegal in Brazil. Sex with minors (those under 18) IS illegal, and is prosecuted.

"Profiting" from prostitution as a third party is illegal, and there has been some discussion about whether or not running one of the escort saunas might fall under that provision of the criminal code. However, I am not aware of any prosecutions. The escort saunas have been operating openly for as long as 30 years, when the first ones opened during the era of the military dictatorship.
