I have been checking on the best fares to Rio from Phoenix. Varig is posting some good fares from their gateway cities, but when you add the tax, they become competetive with the other airlines. So far, the best I have come up with, r/t Phoenix/Rio is $701.00, taxes included. It is from a consolodator called ITS. If you travel over a weekend, the fare rises to $721.00. Also, it is on my favorite Continental route. I leave Phoenix at 4:40 PM, arrive Bush Sr at 8:10 PM, connect to Continental #93 at 9:10 PM and arrive in Rio the next day at 12:55 PM. I do not get frequent flyer miles. Also, it will cost $250 to change the reservation. The agent I spoke with was very helpful and nice. Her name is Sabrina and the phone number is 602-957-3456
