CPF HOLDERS: TIME TO FILE YOUR EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE

The window for filing your tax exemption certificate as a non-resident opened today and continues until November. Don't put off filing your exemption certificate because it's a huge hassle if your number is cancelled for not filing.

 

The process is very quick and easy (although you may need a Portuguese-speaker to guide you through it). Go to http://www.receita.fazenda.gov.br and then click on Declarações. Select Declaração de Isento 2004, then fill in the form. Because you aren't Brazilian you won't have a Titulo de Eleitor. I just filled in the number 0 and the program accepted it. You'll need your CPF number, of course. Also fill in your foreign and not your local Brazilian address on the form. (You're claiming to be a non-resident, remember?) Then print out the confirmation notice you'll receive if the process works correctly and keep it with your tax records. And finito until 2005!
