I am thinking about hiring Eduardo as a guide and go between for me. I was to meet him when I was to go to Rio last year, but the trip was cancelled. I do not want to hire him for sex, as he is not really my type. I have been reading all the posts about him on here, and find that most of the posts are positive, a few negatives. So..if I pay his way, buy the food, etc, what would be the proper payment for a day, and if I decide that I want him for numerous days, should the price be a little less as he is guaranteed work. I am not cheap and realize that these guys are certainly not by any means well off, but I don't want to over pay him. At the end of his service, I may offer him some extra or a gift. I did have an e-mail address for him, but have since lost it, if anyone has one, would appreciate it. Opinions please.

If you want someone to take you to the saunas and sit with you in the bar area or bring you to Corujinha's so that you could have company there - Eduardo is an OK choice. For any other guiding - I would suggest you look elsewhere. If you want to give me more of an idea of what you are looking for in a guide or companion - I can possibly give yous some ideas.

As a go between for the purpose of meeting the Rio boys, I agree with FloridaRobb that Jonathon would be a good choice. If anyone knows lots of Rio garotos and can make arrangements it is him. I think he has an inside into all of the boys were in the saunas or on the side.

He is reliable and savvy - not Eduardos strong points,

As one who has hired Eduardo as a guide, I would advise you to consider hiring someone else. While it certainly is helpful to have a semi-capable English speaker by your side, it is very evident that Eduardo has no background in guide work and has very little knowledge of the history, architecture, and basic information regarding the sights of Rio. When asked about certain sights, his basic answer was, "Oh, that's not very interesting". Also, if one of the reasons for your hiring Eduardo is for security, consider that I was a victim of a robbery while he was escorting our party. Soooooo... I would reiterate what Gulliver and FloridaRob wrote, that Jonathan is a very good choice to hire. He's a great guy who knows the city and the boys. I can get his phone number for you if you want. Also, Carlo Romano is a great source to provide you with info. He is a wealth of information and a truly nice guy. Good luck. Robb

I shall be in Rio by the end of the month. This is my third trip there. i can speak spanish and some portuguese. I don't really need someone to take me around, except maybe at night to ensure security. I would rather be interested in meeting a guide who could advise on

"garotos" in saunas or elsewhere. Of course he should be reliable: I should be able to trust him if I invite a guy to my appartment. From what I see Jonathon is the good choice. How can I contact him?

It can get a little confusing as to who to use for what as each has their own niche and competency.

Carlo Romano, together with his partner Hector, is outstanding as a travel agent, booking special events (hangliding, etc) and help in business affairs.

Jonathan is connected to at least one website (Brazil Men I think) and is a good go-between for these models, some of which are in the saunas and some of which aren't, is often around Corujinha's and knows many of the boys.

Eduardo, who seems to have been getting more reliable again lately, is very good for knowing almost all of the boys in-and-out of the saunas and generally knowing the scene. Not as sophisticated, but bright and very good company as a guide/companion for the nightlife and saunas (and reasonable).

A really great guide/driver is Wilton da Costa. Wilton is not gay but he is gay-friendly. A problem came up with the apartment management regarding the number of boys that were visiting my apartment. I called Wilton, he came to the apartment, and the problem was immediately solved - in my favor. He will not be able to help with escorts or the sauna's but he will take you around Rio or wherever you want to go. He has a nice, very clean car and speaks fluent English. He is very knowledgable since he is a registered guide. In September 2002 Wilton picked me up at the airport and took me to my apartment. We discuss the charge for his guide services. He told me 45/hour. I was still thinking in $$$ and told him that was alot of money. Of course, he was talking R$, which was very reasonable. Wilton knows many,, many people in Copa and all around Rio. I ran out of a medication while in Rio, called Wilton. He took me to a pharmacy and got the medication for me. I have already phoned Wilton regarding my September 2004 trip. If there is a problem with Wilton it's that he goes into too much detail when visiting various sites.

His cell number is 9974-8341.

Although I've never met Jhonny in person, he and I conversed twice via telephone when I was in Rio in October 2002; since then I've sent him two emails and he's responded quickly and interestingly; he has a site:BrazilianMen.net.br; his e address is gringorj@hotmail.com

As before I've recommended a very capable guide/escort to you guys; his real name is Antonio, but he goes by Tom. He formerly worked for RioTur (one of the largest if not the largest) guide services for tourists; he escorts, too, but I hired him as a guide last October for two occasions. I paid him in dollars-- for almost six hrs. ($40) plus lunch. (I plan to engage his services in October 2004.)

Presently, he is in school studying international relations; prior to that he trained to be a model; apparently that fell through because of his present area of studies. I am fastidious, thus I recommend this personable young man. But, remember, if you hire him-- hold firm to the confirmation. Tom is concerned about clients fulfilling their arrangements. His e address is: excitedspeedo@yahoo.com.br; he's also at Rentboy.com under Rio (Brazil).

Eduardo is worth every penny! You are wise to hire him. The price will depend on how many in your party, where you want to go, how long you want his service. So you will just have to talk to him directly, i will post his e-mail when I get home, I don't have it here. You can't go wrong with him!! A total sweetheart, has saved my ass on numerous occations, knows EVERYONE in Rio, even the head waiters in the best restaurants roll out the red carpet for him, when a place is packed, you can bet a table and four chairs will "magically"" appear. His taste is impecable, gay of course, in both men and restaurants. He will help you find what you are looking for, and help you avoid the bad apples.

You have to remember that its horses for courses here. For a first visit Eduardo will know more than enought to get you through and be good company. I have found him extremely reliable. But other people here who have been here a while will at some point pass Eduardos knowledge of buildings and architecture and are probably asking the wrong person.

Mind you if you are asking questions, you coulds also ask yourself am I paying for this information or is it another freeby. If I worked all day I might not be so inclined to work in my time off.

Its not all doom and gloom for eduardo- its a limited market with not many occupants. He can easily study walks in centro or other areas and offer them as walking tours.

Personaly I regard him as more of a friend now. Occassionally I ask for the brasillian of a work and occasionally he asks for an english word. Exchange is no robery.

Once again, I agree with Driver regarding the services of Eduardo. He is excellent AT WHAT HE DOES. Going shopping, to Sauna, great restaurants, local attractions, companionship, communication!, giving you the low down on EVERYONE (you should'n't assume you can take ALL the sauna boys back to your hotel!) His street smarts are unbeatable, no way can an anglo now living in RIO (Johnny) see the shit coming. And when it comes, it come FAST!! Please remember, be kind with your remarks. To disparage a businessman's reputation can damage his ability to pay the rent. And be certain the Carioca's are ON LINE and reading everything we are writting here!!

WT,

I am a new member of M4M; but not new to Rio by any means. If you are interested in seriously seeing the city of Rio de Janiero for all its history, beauty, and unique style, I doubt that Eduardo would be the way to go. Most Brazilians do not know much about their own history; and most of the "boys" in Rio are not Cariocas. I can refer you to Georges, a tour guide with a car who speaks perfect English. His phone is 9976-3776, and his email is gsalamani@hotmail.com. Georges is not gay; but he is certainly gay friendly, has a wonderful sense of humor, and the most beautiful eyes you ever saw. By email you can ask him what is day rate, half a day rate, etc., is.

There are certain things for which you do not need a guide. Gray Line is better for Petropolis than a guide.

Then I will post re Eduardo. I spent quite a bit of time with Eduardo last year. His apartment was about 1/2 block from mine so we became friends and I also enjoyed 3 sexual encounters with him. Eduardo may be an experienced guide for the saunas and sex industry but, believe it or not, there is more to Rio and Brasil in general than sex. I have never heard of anyone going to a championship soccer game and all they talked about was watching guys piss!! Anyway, I can say that if one is interested in the cultural "history, beauty, and unique style, I doubt Eduardo would be the way to go". Nothing against Eduardo. I will probably see him during my 2 months trip to Brasil in September and October. My, my Driver, aren't we defensive???

Well I was one of the guys that went to that match and it was a fun evening even if the campionship hopefuls lost 2-0. The piss comment was a fair reflection of the state of the stadium in that the toilet facilities were less than adequate and a lot of locals seemed to use the wall. Eduardo was not our guide for that night in any event.

Again an assertion not backed up with examples from practical experience.

Not at all, constructive cristism is welcome here and help others make informed chocies on the services they seek from others. If you have specific examples or cristisms then this is the place to post them. However guesses and vague generalities are misleading and can hurt the business he is endeavouring to maintain. Having seen the upset other comments have caused him, I don't have any problem qualifying others comments not supported by factual evidence.

I would support the atlantico or the sequeiro grill in the same way.

For any of you that have commented that the pissing accomodations, otherwise known as "amenities", are far less important than the soccer games played there and the great history of the Maracanã stadium -- did you know they are considering tearing the whole stadium down because of the lack of these "amenities".

Sounds like the observations of the pissing accomodations are far more important than the single game was. :-)

Very interesting article. Thanks for posting the link. It will be South America's year to host the World Cup in 2014 so maybe Maracana can be replaced by then and Rio would be assured of hosting another World Cup. Last night I could hear the weeping and moaning coming from Mexico as Brazil whipped their skanky asses 4 - 0 in the Copa America!!
