I just read a travel warning about 'pitboys' that attack / rob people as they come out of clubs down in Rio. The name comes from 'pitbulls' because they are so ruthless, the article cliams. ANy truth to this fellow MCr's?

This isn't much of a problem IN the gay clubs, but there have been bashings outside of them (especially around Dama de Ferro in Ipanema) so be alert, especially when you're leaving the clubs, and take a cab home! The bars have been beefing up security outside, too, and have been working with the police to try to put an end to this crap.

 

The incidents in question have taken place at straight discos or at private parties the pitboys crashed. The average Carioca's patience for this kind of behavior by over-steroided middle-class youths is just about zero, and there have been several arrests (with mommy and daddy just stunned at what junior's been up to and swearing he's an angel at home) and convictions. That should help put a stop to this behavior.

 

Another of the problems with paradise, but by using your street smarts you shouldn't run into trouble.
