Does anybody know of any good and reliable discount travel sites or consolidators for airline tickets, etc. -- like orbitz or expedia or airlineconsolidator -- in Brazil?

I mean for tickets originating in Brazil like Brazil-US or domestic within Brazil.

On the US-based sites either you can't book a ticket originating outside the US or Canada (on some airline sites too, like Delta), or else they have one price for US-Brazil and ridiculously higher prices (30-50%) for the same itinerary on the same days but in the opposite direction, for example:

-- Chicago-Rio 723, but Rio-Chicago on the same days 1104 (same 3 carriers)

-- on another one Chicago-Rio 737, but same days Rio-Chicago 1074 (same carrier) or 990 (different carrier, which was a little more than 737 going the other way)

This doesn't seem to make any sense. It's not a volume of sales issue because wherever you start you're still going in both directions on the same flights, and on the internet they're not maintaining a separate expensive office for a small number of customers.

So are there any Brazilian (or other) sites that offer good deals for trips originating in Brazil?

I just tested Varig - English website to check flights originating either in Brazil or in America, same dates and cities, et cetera - The roundtrip price was the same regardless of the origin.

Varig often has internet specials which you can find on their website located at http://www.varigbrasil.com/english/

As of today, there is no special posted on their site. Check back often and you will find some very attractive fares on Varig to and from America.

If you desire to travel within Brazil, on the left hand side of Varig's website page click on "Brazil Airpass" The Brazil Pass can save you "muito reais" for in-country travel.

Your being a "Brazil Nut", indicates that you may already know about Varig's website and thus, this information may be of no use to you. Perhaps someone who is unfamiliar with Varig's website will read this post and may benefit from the information.

Happy travels

Check out the website that TomCal recommended; it was posted not too long ago, so it should be amongst pages 1/2/or3.

I have a website that I'll give to you within a day or two. Right now I am driving to SF for a "hot" date with my Brasilian escort friend.

In regard to traveling within the country itself, might I suggest that you purchase a Brasilian Pass which currently sells for $399 1-4 stops, 5 $499 and so forth? It's advertised on the site that I'll post.

Contact: YesTravel.net via their 800 number. You should be able to get answers plus discounted air travel. Also, try Brol.com; both travel agencies are in Miami; the former one is 50% gay owned. Juan quoted me a wonderful price for Miami, Buenos Aires, Rio, Sao Paulo, and back to Miami; his price was under that of United or AA, but I'll be flying on United for under $1000, Juan's quoted price...

The only on-line site I know in Brazil is http://www.decolar.com It's in Portuguese. The travel supplements of the major Rio and SP papers are similar to those in the U.S. They have lots of small adds by agencies advertising low fares. I haven't used them yet, so I don't know if they're bait-and-switch, but there are several advertising fares to the U.S. in the range of US$600 - 700.

I don't know why South-North fares are higher than North-South fares, but that's been true for years. If anyone here is an airline rate agent, maybe they can explain the reason!

Thanks for the reply.

I know about Varig and other airline sites. I was looking for a site that offers discounted tickets, like the big travel sites here or a consolidator. Varig may have the same price both ways, but it's the full price. Rather than bring the Brazil-US price down to US-Brazil, they have the US-Brazil price up there with the other one. And it's hit and miss whether you stumble onto a time when they are having a sale.

I am mostly interested in the international Brazil-US part, but also somewhat for some domestic travel, for which a Brazil Airpass would not be appropriate or economical.

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

Thanks, Axiom.

I did check Tomcal's recommendation before I posted. It's airlineconsolidator.com that I referred to in my original post. They are the ones that had Chicago-Rio 737, but same days Rio-Chicago 1074 (same carrier) or 990 (different carrier, which was a little more than 737 going the other way).

The Brazil Airpass isn't appropriate in this case. However thanks for the suggestion of the 2 Miami agencies. They are in the US, but I think Brol.com specializes in Brazil and they may be able to do better on the Brazil-US itineraries. They may even be the US branch of a Brazilian outfit.

And I'm looking forward to seeing the site that you promised.

Obrigado, tri.

decolar sounds promising, and that's the kind of lead I was looking for. The ads in the papers sound good, too, but they are harder to reach. The prices sound good -- the Brazil-US equivalents of the US-Brazil fares, which it seems should be available on all the sites. But as you say they may be bait and switch, and there is the question of reliability. If you or anyone has any experience with any of them I'd like to hear about it.

I too would love to hear the explanation for the discrepancy in fares based on the direction, if anyone here knows. Trivial differences are to be expected because of differences in taxes, departure fees, etc., but not 30-50%! You'd think that the fare from A to B would be the same as the fare from B to A.

RE: Discount travel in Brazil

The Airpass is only a good deal if you're traveling to multiple cities along a circuitous routing (or even doubling back). Or if you're traveling very long distances. Otherwise, it's often cheaper to just buy regular tickets. In many cases, stopovers are allowed along the route for no extra charge.

There's also a Mercosul pass that can be a money-saver if you're traveling between Mercosul countries like Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.

After being absent from the Brazilian travel scene for a while, deeply discounted "redeye" flights are back within the past few weeks. Fares compare to long-distance bus fares! Obviously, planes are faster! Ask for the "vôo coruja" ("nightowl flight"). On a long haul you could save quite a lot of money.

Sorry to delay getting back to you. The website is BrazilSpecialist.com. (I failed to read your topic/thread carefully, thus I alluded to the one you'd already mentioned. I just reread and noted the error on my part.) Axiom2001

Hope you find what you want!:-)
