First off, I wanted to say how great this site is, and that all of the comraderie all of you share with each other is quite amazing. I have been reading from this site for about a year now, and all of the info has been a help to me and has also inspired me (along with countless others, I'm sure) to take my first trip to Rio in a month.

 

That all being said, I have read the FAQ page, and still have a couple of questions, the first probably being the most offbeat: Is anyone on this forum aware of any straight saunas for a traveling partner of mine who is a straight male? I fully intend on going to all of the saunas that the posters here discuss daily, but one of my friends who is coming on the trip is straight and a great guy, and it would be easier (and probably more fair) if I could direct him to some straight saunas while I go to the gay ones. Any help would be very appreciated and would help this M4Mer be able to spend more time exploring the gay side of Rio.

 

Secondly, I know that you have discussed the Atlantico as the place to stay in Rio. My group has already been booked into the Caesar Park in Ipanema which I'm told is one of the best hotels in Rio. Does anyone know if I will be able to bring boys back to my room? I don't mind if the guys have to leave an ID or even paying a small fee, but can a hotel block a guy from coming up to the room altogether? Thanks for the info.

They have a forum on Rio 2003 with detailed chat about str8 termas. By the sounds of it, your friend may have as much fun as you will, though he may have to spend more than you will.

Yes, there are "straight" saunas in Rio. Jake? Do you want to fill this poster in on what you know?

 

My understanding is that the quality places are more expensive than the gay saunas. There's supposed to be one of the better ones in Rio on the same block as the Siqueira Grill that's been so frequently mentioned on this site. Jake knows the name and exact address, I believe, so I hope he'll fill in the info here if he sees this posting.

 

As long as they're dressed discreetly, I'm sure you can have "visitors" at the Caesar Park. They may have to check in at the desk and leave their ID, and you may have to pay a supplement.

P.S. If you can't bring someone back to the Caesar Park, oir you don't feel comfortable doing that, remember the numerous hotels by the hour. Use the search function on this board for terms like "motel," and "Rio." There's one called the Agris that's gay friendly on r. Farme de Amoedo, the street whose foot is at the Ipanema gay beach.

I don't have any personal knowledge about the straight suanas in Rio, but I do know of a website you might want to check out -- http://blameitonrio4travel.com This is a travel agency site. Click on “Rio”, then click on “Single Men’s Guide”. This site has quite a bit of information, including a list of names, addresses and phone numbers of straight saunas.

Well, what a surprise! One of the upscale straight saunas, the Monte Carlo, turns out to be right around the corner from Corujinha at r. Hilario de Gouveia, 19. Just look for the discreet building with a discreet little green awning. So your friend can have a rollicking good time and then just stroll over afterwards to meet you for drinks, assuming he isn't bothered by the Rio "low life" like us!

Not Rio, and not a sauna, but if you can get your straight friend to a club in Sao Paulo called Cafe Photo, he will be in 7th heaven, trust me!

Café Photo is definitely "known" in São Paulo! It supposedly attracts the crème-de-la-crème of working women there, so they won't be cheap. But they will be gorgeous!

 

Earlier this year I happened to catch a TV interview with the Café Photo bouncer! (This is considered family fare on Brazilian TV!) He's a VERY handsome and evidently very solidly built Afro-Brazilian guy about 7 feet tall. Men that tall are a real rarity in Brazil, so he seems to have developed some celebrity status because of his size. From the interview, he seemed like a nice guy. Working in that environment, though, I can't help wondering if he isn't supplementing his salary with some escorting of his own, or if he wouldn't consider it? If he's as hung as he's tall (two things that experience teaches don't always correlate) I'd consider a trip to Sampa to make a pitch!

 

Have you heard about him, and do you know anything about him, Vinotinto? Inquiring minds want to know! :9

The Monte Carlo sauna is the best straight sauna in Rio with gorgeous women that you would expect to pay $300-500 for in the U.S. The going rate here is R250-300 (less than a third, but much more, obviously, than the boys get - R50-100 tops)
